Position Summary 
The Education & Outreach Director oversees the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs that promote animal sentience and welfare through academic curricula, school-based initiatives, industry training and community engagement. This role builds strategic partnerships, manages staff and volunteers, oversees curricula for diverse audiences, and measures program impact to drive positive outcomes for animals and people.


This position can be based in Chengdu, China, or Tam Dao, Vietnam, and involves frequent regional and international travel. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive education strategy aligned with organizational mission and goals.
  • Design curricula, workshops, presentations, and digital learning resources on topics such as animal sentience, emotions, cognition, behavior, veterinary & behavioral welfare, and responsible companion ownership.
  • Manage, train, and supervise education staff, interns, and volunteers; recruit and support subject matter presenters.
  • Create and maintain age-appropriate programs for children, teens, adults, and professional audiences.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with universities, schools, community groups, animal shelters, veterinarians, and government agencies; represent the organization externally. 
  • Coordinate and lead outreach events, community workshops, and public awareness campaigns.
  • Oversee program budgets, grants, contracts, and resource allocation related to education & training initiatives.
  • Develop evaluation metrics, collect data, and produce reports demonstrating program impact, effectiveness and outcomes; use findings to refine programming.
  • Ensure all educational content is accurate, evidence-based, culturally responsive, and compliant with organizational policies and legal/regulatory requirements. 
  • Manage content for educational materials, and support content delivery for websites, social media, and newsletters
  • Stay current on best practices in animal sentience, welfare, behavior, and education methods; incorporate new research and pedagogy.
  • Support fundraising and grant-writing efforts by contributing programmatic narratives, data, and budget inputs.


Requirements

  • Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Animal Science, Biology, Nonprofit Management, or related field; Master’s preferred.


  • Experience
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in education, program development, or outreach, preferably within animal welfare, humane societies, shelters, or related nonprofits.
    • Demonstrated experience managing teams, budgets, and collaborative partnerships.
    • Experience designing curricula and evaluation frameworks for diverse audiences.


  • Knowledge
    • Strong knowledge of animal behavior, welfare issues, and community-based education best practices.


  • Skills / Abilities
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, public speaking, and presentation skills.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, learning management systems, virtual presentation platforms, and data collection/reporting tools.
    • Grant writing and fundraising experience is a plus.
    • Flexible schedule including occasional evenings/weekends.
