Senior Principal Engineer

This role offers eligibility for equity awards, aligning employee contributions with the Company's continued growth and performance. Additionally, this role is eligible for a $20,000 sign-on bonus, subject to the terms and conditions of the Company's sign-on bonus program.

Apex is hiring a Senior Principal Engineer Manager to be based in Vancouver, Richland or Walla Walla, WA.  

This position will play a critical role in growing our Apex local presence and delivering multidiscipline projects throughout the state of Washington with our well-established engineering teams.  This position will have a focused emphasis with state and local agencies in SW and Eastern Washington with anticipated collaboration with our other local regional offices in Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Bend, and Boise.  Based in Vancouver, WA, this individual will collaborate with our staff to lead business development strategies and support successful delivery of multidisciplinary engineering teams across our existing Washington State offices.

Our Apex offices have a significant historical presence within the communities we serve, averaging more than 20 years of local relationships with our agency and private development clients. You will be partnering with our local staff to leverage both your current and our Apex existing clients’ histories to support both marketing and project delivery goals while providing you well established turnkey relationships in support of your efforts.  

Typical projects include major roadway corridors, signalized intersections, roundabouts, bridges, multimodal facilities, ADA improvements, complete streets, and other multidisciplinary infrastructure improvements. These complex projects often involve state and federal funding to deliver roadway design, stormwater system design, utility coordination and design, traffic analysis and design, structure design, and construction management.

In addition to leading the infrastructure practice, this individual will also serve as a senior level engineering and project management resource to support Apex staff growth initiatives through implementation of industry best practices in partnership with Apex Regional Commercial Leadership (RCL) marketing team and the company wide Project Management Office (PMO) team.    You will play a key role in managing client relationships, actively participating in the seller-doer model by developing new business opportunities, expanding existing client relationships, and mentoring the next generation of project managers and engineers to successfully deliver projects.

• →Serve as the project manager with a delivery portfolio of multidisciplinary infrastructure projects with cumulative annual project totals exceeding $3 million, ensuring technical excellence, quality, and successful project delivery within schedule and budget.
• →Contribute to the successful pursuit and capture of more than $2 million in annual business development across Washington and Oregon, including support to client engagements, proposal preparation, interviews, and marketing effort alignment to strategic growth initiatives.
• →Lead business development efforts for infrastructure projects with southwest Washington, Eastern Washington, and with other agencies throughout northwest for which you have relationships.
• →Develop and maintain strong client relationships while identifying new project opportunities and expanding existing accounts.
• →Serve as Project Manager and/or Principal-in-Charge for complex infrastructure engineering projects from planning through construction.
• →Oversee project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client satisfaction to ensure successful project execution within approved scopes and budgets.
• →Provide technical leadership for roadway, highway, intersection, bridge, multimodal, and corridor improvement projects.
• →Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including roadway, drainage, utilities, structures, traffic, and environmental disciplines.
• →Effectively manage multiple assignments and priorities while collaborating with the Principal-in-Charge and other senior leadership.
• →Prepare and review technical reports, engineering studies, design documents, and project deliverables.
• →Mentor, coach, and develop junior engineers and project managers, fostering technical growth and leadership within the team.
• →Represent the firm at client meetings, industry events, and professional organizations to strengthen market presence and support continued growth.
• →Promote a collaborative, client-focused culture while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
• 15+ years of progressive experience managing transportation projects for WSDOT and/or local agencies in Washington along with similar experience in Oregon.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in both Washington and Oregon, or the ability to obtain both within six months of hire.
• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary transportation design projects from pursuit through construction while keeping projects within scoped schedules and budgets.
• Strong knowledge of WSDOT Design Manual, AASHTO, MUTCD, and Washington State and local agency standards.
• Experience with project management, budgeting, scheduling, and client management.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
• Proven business development and client relationship experience.

• Experience with MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer and 3D roadway modeling.
• Existing relationships with WSDOT, Clark County, City of Vancouver, Port of Vancouver, and other regional transportation agencies across the northwest.
• Experience managing alternative delivery projects and multidisciplinary consultant teams.
