Job Summary:

This position reports to the Facilities Manager with minimal supervision and has the authority to establish priorities for the work unit; adjust cleaning procedures and products for best results; and reassign staff resources as needed. Supervises custodians performing the cleaning of buildings, furnishings, equipment, and surrounding areas, including routine and specialized cleaning activities; determines work procedures; assigns and inspects completed work; implements hiring or termination decisions; conducts performance reviews; approves leave; orders, stores, issues, and monitors the use of cleaning supplies. This position is responsible for quality custodial services, timely job completion, training and supervision of subordinate staff, and the effectiveness of the work unit. Provides administrative support to the Facilities Manager, including maintaining and tracking unit metrics for executive staff.

Job Duties:

Maintains inventory records of stock used or acquired for custodial purposes; routes supply requests and equipment; ensures current housekeeping standards are met and maintained at all facilities; and reports shortages, deficiencies, or faults to the Facilities Manager.

Oversees and supervises the work of custodial personnel. Guides and trains new employees in performing cleaning tasks and properly operating equipment. Evaluates, coordinates, and assigns cleaning tasks to team members based on operational needs and skill levels. Ensures all custodial staff adhere to established work schedules.

Drives a state vehicle and distributes custodial supplies to various buildings and grounds within the assigned area. Attends in-service training pertaining to new equipment, cleaning solutions, and current custodial standards. Assists with maintaining required services for state equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
- Cleaning procedures, sanitation, and safety.
- Operation of powered cleaning equipment.
- Cleaning agents and chemical reactions that occur when solutions are mixed.
- Role-modeling appropriate practices for new employees.
- Basic groundskeeping methods and plant life maintenance.
- Agency building security procedures.
- Cleaning supplies, storage, and rotation.

Skill in:
- Use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances.
- Application of cleaning methods and techniques.
- Positioning of self to avoid injury when lifting heavy objects.
- Read, write, and communicate effectively, and complete required daily paperwork.

Ability to:
- Safely dispose of chemical liquids and other hazardous components.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Exert physical effort when handling objects weighing more than 25 pounds frequently.
- Push, pull, bend, twist, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Work in a physical environment involving dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, or similar elements for most of the workday.
- Manage time effectively.
- Train others in the operation of cleaning equipment and the proper handling of chemicals.
- Maintain positive working relationships.
- Coach and develop employees, including promoting continuous improvement practices and principles.

Selective Preference(s):

2 years of Custodial supervisor experience

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Requires ability to pass a post-offer physical exam.
