Under the Section Manager's supervision, this position manages unit operations, including staff supervision, training, and performance monitoring. The role ensures work products are technically sound, accurate, and compliant with all State and Federal regulations. Key responsibilities include reviewing technical reports and legal documents, participating in decision-making and problem resolution, championing continuous improvement, developing policies, and managing high-profile projects.
This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

| Job Duties: |
- Manage and supervise staff and unit operations, including providing training, coaching, and implementing disciplinary actions as needed.
- Oversee the unit budget to properly allocate resources for staff training, strategic hiring, travel (in and out of state), and necessary equipment or software purchases.
- Ensure unit compliance with program goals, state and federal rules and regulations, and grant requirements.
- Serve as a technical and regulatory resource for staff, supervisors, stakeholders, customers, and the general public.
- Act as a primary decision-maker for unit-level operational and technical issues.
- Maintain internal and external communication by attending staff meetings, stakeholder meetings, and outreach functions.
- Respond to internal and external information requests regarding compliance, enforcement, and general regulatory requirements.
- Develop and participate in process improvement projects to increase work efficiency, quality, and output across the section.
- Ensure proper use of performance and flow boards by staff, tracking and reporting applicable agency metrics to upper management.
- Prepare annual reports and assist with budget projections, expenditures, and report development.

- Management techniques and results-driven leadership, including personnel coordination and resource management.
- Principles of task delegation, performance specifications, employee motivation, and visual management.
- Data analysis, testing methods, contract/grants administration, and community involvement principles.
- State and federal environmental regulations, department policies, and agency program functions.
- Arizona Management System (AMS) concepts, tools, and continuous problem-solving principles.
- Leadership, supervision, and fostering professional interpersonal relationships.
- Effective written and verbal communication, including public speaking and technical report writing.
- Complex problem solving, decision making, negotiation, and critical thinking.
- Organizational planning, time management, and comprehensive project management.
- Analyzing and interpreting diverse, highly technical data and research materials.
- Establish program priorities and implement operating policies and procedures based on program needs.
- Analyze statutes and policies regarding complex scientific determinations and state legal standards.
- Build effective working relationships with government officials, the regulated community, and the public.
- Direct technical experts to achieve performance measures and refine unit activity metrics.
- Exercise professional judgment to execute decisions independently or within a team environment.
- Ability to be in the office as needed.
| Selective Preference(s): |
- Bachelor of Science degree in the field of environmental science, environmental management, environmental or chemical engineering, biology, hydrology, or other environmental discipline
- 5-10 years of environmental experience in a regulatory agency, consulting, or private industry
- 3 years of supervisory/leadership experience
