ATC Automation is seeking a Machine Builder to join our team in Cookeville, TN. This role offers the opportunity to combine hands-on mechanical expertise with cutting-edge automation technology in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
As a Machine Builder, you will assemble, fit, install, rebuild, and repair custom automated equipment using blueprints, engineering documentation, and technical specifications. You will play a critical role in delivering high-quality automation systems by working closely with engineers and cross-functional teams to ensure equipment is built accurately, efficiently, and to customer requirements.

Your Role
Each day begins by reviewing project documentation to understand system requirements, assembly procedures, and build expectations. You will use a variety of mechanical tools and equipment to assemble and install automated machinery with precision and efficiency.
Success in this role requires a strong commitment to quality, including inspecting components, verifying assemblies, and ensuring all work meets engineering and customer standards. You will collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and fellow team members to troubleshoot issues, support process improvements, and help deliver innovative automation systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assemble, fit, install, rebuild, and repair automated machinery and equipment using engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
- Interpret and apply mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic schematics to support machine assembly and troubleshooting.
- Verify bills of materials (BOMs) and confirm components meet design and customer requirements.
- Align machine components and assemblies, verify tolerances, and ensure proper fit, function, and performance.
- Perform machine setup, operational testing, tryouts, and performance validation.
- Complete layout work, including locating, drilling, and tapping holes as required for assembly.
- Create hand sketches with accurate dimensions to support fabrication or modifications.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and assembly-related issues, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Evaluate nonconforming parts and determine proper disposition, including rework or rejection in accordance with quality standards.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and designers to support machine builds and drawing updates.
- Read electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, and I/O layouts to assist with low-voltage checks and pneumatic system plumbing.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment to support operational excellence and workplace safety.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certificate in manufacturing, assembly, machining, or a related mechanical field preferred.
- 1–3 years of hands-on experience in machine building, assembly, manufacturing, or a related technical environment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with precision mechanical assembly and machine setup.
- Understanding of machining processes, toolmaking, and mechanical design concepts preferred.
- Experience troubleshooting equipment and resolving mechanical issues.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with coworkers, engineers, customers, and cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, follow detailed instructions, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated reliability and consistent attendance.
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Regular standing, walking, pushing, pulling, overhead reaching, and bending.
- Comfortable working underneath machines and overhead.
- Ability to exert:
- 20–50 lbs occasionally
- 10–25 lbs frequently
- Up to 10 lbs continuously
- Visual acuity (near vision, with or without correction).
Working Environment
- High noise levels.
- Physical hazards such as operating machinery.
- Inhalation of fumes, dust and mist.
- Absorption exposure to oil and fluids.
