Fleet Tire Technician

About This Position

Under direct supervision, maintains tire inventory records and transports, diagnoses, repairs, replaces and disposes of tires for a variety of City vehicles and equipment.

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  Inspects and diagnoses damaged tires, identifies cause of tire failure, and determines if failure is due to recall or is covered under warranty.

  Repairs and/or disposes of used tires, as appropriate.

  Collects and transports new and used tires between various locations..

  Maintains used tire inventory records.

• →

  Mounts and dismounts tires on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

  Performs air pressure tire checks in field at various site locations.

  Performs daily housekeeping at shop and field sites.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine tire maintenance.

• Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.

• Knowledge of safety procedures.

• Skill in identifying necessary tire repairs.

• Skill in oral and written communication.

• Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.

• Ability to learn Fleet operations scrapping procedures.

• Ability to mount, dismount, and repair tires on a variety of vehicles and equipment.

• Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.

• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus six (6) months of experience in a related field.

• Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.

• Experience with commercial, medium-duty and heavy- duty tires.

• Experience mounting/dismounting steel and aluminum wheels.

• Experience working with heavy equipment in a shop environment.

• Experience with retread programs and or casing evaluation.

• Experience operating forklifts in a shop or warehouse environment.

• Experience managing inventory and Shop Supplies.

• TIA commercial Tire Services (CTS) certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

• Ability to travel to more than one work location.

• If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment with the City.

Monday - Friday

7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Occasional evening, weekend and/or holiday hours may be required based upon operational needs.

The Fleet Tire Technician is 1 of 2 positions located with the Austin
Fleet Mobility Service Department. The position reports to an Inventory Control II Supervisor.

The position supports our department by managing tire inventory and handling all tire-related service needs for city vehicles and equipment. This includes inspecting damaged tires, transporting tires between locations and safely mounting and dismounting tires.

This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.
