The Mechanical Plumber Prefabrication Shop Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating all activities in the prefabrication shop, including production scheduling, tool management, quality control, safety, and staff development. This role ensures the safe, accurate, and timely fabrication of mechanical assemblies while fostering the growth of prefabrication assemblers and plumbing apprentices.


Core Responsibilities:


  • Plan, schedule, and assign work to meet production targets and project deadlines
  • Manage time entry for shop employees to ensure accurate recording of labor hours and job costing
  • Monitor output for compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards
  • Create, implement, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all workstations and shop safety processes
  • Coordinate closely with project managers, field supervisors, and procurement to align shop activities with operational requirements
  • Lead and supervise a team of welders, pipefitters, assemblers, and laborers
  • Provide training, coaching, and mentorship to support the development of apprentices and trade staff
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and set clear expectations for productivity, quality, and safety
  • Foster a positive, team-focused work environment
  • Manage the inventory, organization, maintenance, and safe operation of all shop tools and equipment, including inspections and replacement procedures
  • Ensure proper tool usage and adherence to established protocols
  • Inspect completed assemblies and subassemblies to verify accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards
  • Review and maintain quality documentation, including inspection records and checklists
  • Manage material handling, storage, and inventory to support efficient production and minimize waste
  • Coordinate staging and delivery of prefabricated materials to project sites
  • Promote a safe work environment by leading toolbox talks, safety meetings, and job hazard assessments
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, maintain safe equipment operation, and investigate any incidents or near misses
  • Track labor hours, production progress, material usage, and tool inventories
  • Prepare reports on shop performance, tool and equipment status, and staff development activities

Technical Skills:


  • Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and specifications
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods, welding, rigging, and safe work practices
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and scheduling or inventory software

Interpersonal Skills:


  • Effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to mentor apprentices and support team development
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on safety and quality standards

 

Qualifications:


  • Journeyperson certification in Pipefitting, Plumbing, or Welding, or equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical prefabrication or an industrial shop environment, including supervisory responsibilities
  • Experience mentoring and developing apprentices and trade staff
  • Valid Forklift Operator Certification or willingness to obtain upon hire


Working Conditions:


  • Shop-based position with occasional site visits as required
  • Requires standing, walking, lifting, and working near fabrication equipment
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory
