Sr. Staff Engineer, R&D/Medication Delivery

The Sr. Staff R&D Engineer will be a key contributor within BD Medication Delivery Solutions, Injection Systems team. The individual in this position will possess extensive technical expertise and a broad understanding of related disciplines, developing innovative solutions to complex technical challenges through the regular application of ingenuity and creativity. He/she will provide technical and project leadership for cross-functional product development initiatives, coordinating activities across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and external partners to ensure successful execution from concept through commercialization. The individual will play a leading role in the development, integration, analysis, testing, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of medical devices used for the preparation and delivery of parenteral and enteral medications. Experience with elastomeric materials and components, including their design, characterization, manufacturing processes, performance evaluation, and integration into medication delivery systems, is highly desirable.

Job Responsibilities Include:
 

• Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives. Assignments are often self-initiated. Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to achieve desired technical, project, and business outcomes.
• Provides technical and project leadership for complex product development and lifecycle management initiatives, developing project strategies, aligning cross-functional teams, managing technical risks, and driving execution to meet program objectives.
• Serves as an organizational spokesperson on advanced projects and programs. Acts as an advisor to management, customers, and cross-functional stakeholders on complex technical, product development, and research-related matters.
• Applies advanced engineering principles, theories, and concepts across multiple disciplines. Contributes to the development of new technologies, methodologies, and design approaches. Solves unusually complex technical problems with highly innovative and effective solutions.
• Develops advanced technological concepts and guides their maturation into successful commercial products. Decisions and recommendations have significant impact on product quality, regulatory compliance, business objectives, and organizational success.
• Leads and guides the successful completion of major development programs, coordinating activities across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Procurement, and external partners.
• Interacts with senior internal and external personnel on technical, project, and strategic matters, frequently requiring coordination across organizations, suppliers, development partners, and customers.
• Provides technical leadership for material, design, and process changes through the design control process, supported by well-documented scientific rationale, engineering analyses, and risk assessments.
• Demonstrates accountability for the successful and timely completion of project deliverables, technical workstreams, and key business objectives.
• Develops technical solutions to complex problems using sound engineering principles and utilizes experimental, computational, analytical, and statistical methods to support decision-making.
• Provides technical expertise in elastomeric materials and components, including material selection, formulation considerations, manufacturing processes, characterization, performance testing, component design, supplier collaboration, and integration into drug delivery systems.
• Designs, develops, and utilizes in vivo and in vitro models to evaluate product performance, design improvements, and clinical-use conditions.
• Applies innovative, risk-based approaches to product development challenges while demonstrating sound technical judgment and original thinking.
• Develops robust test methods, designs test fixtures, and executes measurement system analyses to ensure data reliability and product understanding.
• Ensures compliance with BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through the application and promotion of sound quality, risk management, and engineering principles.
• Plans, executes, and analyzes Design of Experiments (DOE) to optimize designs, characterize product performance, and support development decisions.
• Authors, reviews, and leads technical activities including bench studies, tolerance analyses, design verification, design validation, supplier engagement, material specifications, component specifications, and technical reports.
• Performs advanced data analysis using statistical methods, regression analyses, modeling techniques, and transfer function development to support product design and characterization.
• Collects, records, interprets, analyzes, and presents technical data and conclusions to peers, project teams, business leadership, customers, and regulatory stakeholders.
• Provides advanced engineering expertise and product evaluation support to identify, assess, and mature new product opportunities, supporting business case development, technology strategy, and portfolio growth initiatives.
• Mentors and develops engineers and technical team members by providing technical guidance, coaching, and leadership, helping to build organizational capability and engineering excellence.

• Bachelors/Masters/PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering discipline. 
• B.S.: 12+ years of progressive product development experience in a regulated industry.
• M.S.:  10+ years of progressive product development experience in a regulated industry.
• Ph.D.: 7+ years of experience of progressive product development experience in a regulated industry.
• Strong technical judgment and extensive technical leadership skills. 
• Demonstrated capability of leading R&D product development projects. 
• Experience in guiding team/individuals to develop technical solutions to complex problems. 
• Sound knowledge of engineering first principles. 
• R&D functional planning, requirement generation and technical (DFSS/Design/Cross functional) reviews for all product development phases. 
• Strong project management, prioritizing and multi-tasking skills to work within tight deadlines. 
• Knowledge of solid modeling (SolidWorks or equivalent). 
• Ability to effectively and clearly communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals and teams. 
• Experience in directing associates and leading small cross-functional groups is required.   
• Proficient in Microsoft Project. 
• Disciplined phase-gate product development processes & project planning. 
• Proficiency with fixture design including basic machining considerations and developing test methods. 
• Understanding of Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA). 
• Product development considerations for tightly controlled, high-volume manufacturing process.  
• Strong creative, analytical and problem solving skills. 
• Good written & verbal communication skills. 

·       Knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC) practices, and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies.
