POSITION PURPOSE:
The City of Birmingham, Michigan (EOE) is seeking highly motivated candidates for a paid Human Resources (HR) Internship.
Under supervision of the Human Resources Manager, the HR Intern will perform a variety of function to assist the department in its operations. Work assignments and projects will involve personnel administration, recruitment and selection, labor relations, benefits administration, employee recognition and engagement, and other HR activities.
The purpose of this internship is to add value to the City's operations by applying knowledge acquired in coursework studies, while preparing the intern for entry into the Human Resources and/or Management field with a diverse work experience in a professional environment.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Prepares routine correspondence
- Manage assigned projects for recruitment, recordkeeping, and benefits
- Assist with the recruitment process by posting positions, scheduling interviews, and sitting on interview panels
- Maintain records for personnel files, workers comp cases, and FMLA cases
- Assist with benefit administration
- Assist with the planning of employee engagement events
- Additional related responsibilities as assigned.
NECESSARY SKILLS:
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to handle and maintain confidential information
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
- Time management, analytical, and customer service skills
- Proficient computer skills
- Ability to learn quickly on the job
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Current Junior, Senior, or Graduate-level student enrolled in Business/Public Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Development/Psychology, Management, or other related program
- Ability to work individually, within a group and under general supervision
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other common software applications including a desire and ability to quickly learn new programs
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time
TOTAL REWARDS:
- Flexible schedule between 8:00am and 5:00pm from Monday - Friday, 28 hours per week
- Parking (Pierce parking structure)
EQUIPMENT:
- Office space including desk, computer, and phone
- City provided office badge and fob
