Who We Are

BioMarin is a global biotechnology company that relentlessly pursues bold science to translate genetic discoveries into new medicines that advance the future of human health.

Since our founding in 1997, we have applied our scientific expertise in understanding the underlying causes of genetic conditions to create transformative medicines, using a number of treatment modalities.

Using our unparalleled expertise in genetics and molecular biology, we develop medicines for patients with significant unmet medical need. We enlist the best of the best – people with the right technical expertise and a relentless drive to solve real problems – and create an environment that empowers our teams to pursue bold, innovative science. With this distinctive approach to drug discovery, we’ve produced a diverse pipeline of commercial, clinical and preclinical candidates that have well-understood biology and provide an opportunity to be first-to-market or offer a substantial benefit over existing therapeutic options.

About Worldwide Research and Development

From research and discovery to post-market clinical development, our WWRD engine involves all bench and clinical research and the associated groups that support those endeavors. Our teams work on developing first-in-class and best-in-class therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients who live with genetic diseases.

The Enzymes and Metabolic Research group is seeking a highly motivated Associate Director with a strong background in pathology, image analysis, developing cellular models of disease and conducting preclinical translational research evaluating potential therapeutics for severe rare genetic diseases with unmet medical needs.
Applicants should have a strong background in inborn errors of metabolism and/or lysosomal storage disorders with advanced experience in analytical pathology and cell biology.  The Functional Team Lead manages day-to-day responsibilities of the team, including resource planning, assignments, logistics, performance management, and career development planning. This role oversees and supports Scientists, Research Associates and Project Team Leads in the defining of project strategies, experiment planning, laboratory operations, and execution of research study activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Set strategy and serve as the subject matter expert in analytical pathology and cell biology for the Enzymes and Metabolic Research unit.
  • Lead and inspire a high functioning team specialized in advanced analytical pathology techniques and developing cellular models of human disease to screen therapeutic compounds, evaluate mechanisms of action and identify therapeutic leads.
  • Oversee and guide the design of experiments including the development of methods, assays, processes and procedures.
  • Optimize the allocation of team resources across the assigned projects and activities to meet the needs of a growing pipeline of products as well as critical non-program strategies and initiatives.
  • Provide career development guidance to ensure that team members have access to necessary training and tools to develop necessary competencies.
  • Review and approve scientific, technical reports, SOPs and contributions to regulatory submissions.
  • Act as a thought leader within the scientific area of inborn errors of metabolism and lysosomal storage disorders.
Education:
  • PhD with a minimum of 10+ years related experience
  • Background in enzyme replacement therapies, lysosomal storage disorders or rare genetic metabolic disease is preferred.
Skills and Expertise:
  • Strong background in analytical pathology, histological techniques, database management and image analysis platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge in developing cellular models of human genetic diseases.
  • Knowledge of project management tools, methodologies and best practices.
  • Excellent leadership, budgeting and resource allocation skills.
  • Ability to interact successfully with team members from a wide variety of functional areas and all levels of contribution and expertise.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
