Job Summary

The QA Lab Technician supports Brooks Construction's quality assurance and quality control efforts by performing laboratory and field testing of asphalt and related materials to verify compliance with applicable specifications and quality standards. This position conducts material testing, collects samples, maintains accurate testing records, and assists with monitoring product quality throughout production and placement. The QA Lab Technician works closely with the Quality Control Manager, other quality team members, and field personnel to communicate test results and help ensure Brooks consistently delivers a high-quality product.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory and field testing of asphalt, aggregates, and related materials to verify compliance with applicable specifications and quality standards.
  • Conducts testing consistently and accurately in accordance with applicable DOT, FAA, AASHTO, ASTM, customer, and company requirements.
  • Collects asphalt and other material samples from production facilities and job sites as required for testing and evaluation.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the Company's Quality Control Plan (QCP) and follows established quality control procedures.
  • Operates quality control laboratory equipment and testing devices safely, accurately, and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Calibrates, maintains, and assists with servicing testing equipment and accessories to help ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Accurately documents testing activities and maintains required quality records, including calibration records, aggregate testing spreadsheets, daily plant reports, diaries, and other required documentation.
  • Communicates testing results and relevant quality information to the Quality Control Manager and other quality control personnel in a timely manner.
  • Provides testing data while work is in progress to support timely communication with production and field personnel and allow necessary adjustments to be made.
  • Participates in required training and maintains or obtains applicable certifications necessary to perform assigned quality control and testing responsibilities.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to calculate percentages and averages.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to accurately perform testing procedures and work with technical laboratory equipment and devices.
  • High degree of accuracy, thoroughness, and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with quality control personnel, field crews, and other internal and external customers.
  • Ability to follow established procedures, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Ability to organize work, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, customers, and other business partners.
  • Demonstrates dependability, integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to high ethical standards.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and use job-related software and technology.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new testing methods, equipment, procedures, and quality requirements.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in asphalt, quality assurance/quality control, construction materials testing, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous hands-on construction experience preferred.
  • DOT Quality Assurance certification preferred; must have the ability to obtain required certification(s).
  • Valid driver's license required to operate a company vehicle and travel to job sites up to a 90-mile radius of Fort Wayne as necessary.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis throughout the workday.
  • Ability to repetitively lift molds, pans, samples, and other materials from waist level to or above shoulder level.
  • Ability to use both hands simultaneously to lift, carry, push, pull, and separate materials and equipment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and perform other physical movements necessary to collect samples and perform laboratory and field testing.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as necessary to access work areas and perform assigned duties.

Working Environment

  • Work is performed in laboratory, plant, and field/jobsite environments.
  • Regular exposure to indoor and outdoor working conditions, including extreme heat and cold, rain, snow, dust, mud, wet surfaces, and other varying weather conditions.
  • Work may be performed around moving vehicles, construction equipment, machinery, traffic, noise, and other typical construction and plant hazards.
  • Work may involve uneven terrain and other changing jobsite conditions.
  • Regular travel to asphalt plants, job sites, and other locations within the Company's service area is required.
  • Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn in accordance with Company policies and applicable jobsite requirements.
