LAB OVERVIEW
Dr. Lisa Ellerby's laboratory at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging investigates the molecular
mechanisms underlying age-related neurodegenerative diseases and develops novel small molecule and protein therapeutics for brain aging. We employ a rich toolkit including iPSC-derived neurons and organoids, CRISPR/Cas9, single-cell analysis, proteomics, genomics, and phenotypic screening to understand why neurological diseases increase so dramatically with age — and to identify new ways to prevent and treat them.

POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to lead a high-throughput screening (HTS) program focused on brain aging and neurodegeneration. This is an exciting opportunity to drive discovery at the intersection of chemical biology, iPSC-based disease modeling, and advanced high-content imaging — with a specific focus on OXR1 and APOE2 biology. The successful candidate will develop and execute screens to identify small molecules that reverse aging phenotypes or build cellular resilience in neuronal models.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and lead a high-throughput screening (HTS) effort to identify small molecules that reverse aging to a youthful state or build resilience, with a focus on OXR1 and APOE2 biology.
  • Design and execute high-content imaging workflows and Cell Painting–based phenotypic profiling.
  • Develop and apply iPSC-derived neuronal and organoid models for disease-relevant screening.
  • Operate and integrate complex robotic automation platforms and multi-instrument workflows.
  • Analyze complex imaging outputs using Python and R; apply pathway analysis and data visualization tools.
  • Collaborate with biologists across the Buck Institute to standardize protocols and experimental design.
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications as a leading author and apply for fellowship/grant funding.
  • Participate in institutional seminars, programs, and the broader Buck Institute scientific community.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required
  • PhD in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with HTS assay development and laboratory automation platforms
  • Experience with high-content imaging and analysis pipelines (e.g., CellProfiler, Columbus, or
    similar)
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R for image and data analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to drive independent research and a strong publication record
Highly Desirable
  • Experience with iPSC-derived neuronal models or cerebral organoids
  • Familiarity with Cell Painting/image-based morphological profiling
  • Experience with senescence biology, neurodegeneration, or aging-related pathways.
