CVP is seeking a distinguished Director of Oncology for an open-ended consulting engagement supporting a critical, high-visibility federal healthcare initiative. This opportunity is ideally suited for a MD Oncologist with VA experience who is looking to leverage deep clinical expertise and firsthand institutional knowledge in a senior program leadership capacity. In this role, you will serve as a senior project leader on the engagement, providing strategic direction, cross-functional oversight, and executive stakeholder engagement across a complex, multi-site healthcare transformation program. You will lead a team of project managers and workstream leads, providing mentorship and strategic guidance to advance program objectives with precision and impact.
The ideal candidate is a clinically credentialed, operationally experienced leader who understands the complexities of VA healthcare delivery from the inside and is ready to apply that expertise to drive large-scale program strategy, stakeholder alignment, and measurable outcomes at a national level. Your background practicing and leading oncology programs uniquely positions you to bridge the gap between clinical realities and program execution in ways that few others can.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Serve as the senior program leadership presence, leveraging direct oncology experience to inform strategy, build credibility with federal stakeholders, and drive program outcomes
- →Establish and maintain program governance frameworks, decision-making structures, and escalation pathways across complex, multi-site healthcare transformation efforts
- →Lead executive-level engagement with federal healthcare leadership, drawing on firsthand knowledge of VA clinical operations and organizational culture
- →Drive cross-functional coordination across clinical, administrative, technical, and operational teams to ensure cohesive program execution
- →Translate clinical expertise into actionable program strategy, workflow design, and implementation planning
- →Oversee development and maintenance of program plans, risk registers, milestone tracking, and executive reporting
- →Identify and mitigate program risks, issues, and dependencies, escalating as appropriate
- →Lead development of program documentation, briefing materials, and strategic communications for senior leadership audiences
- →Mentor and guide junior project managers and workstream support staff
- →Assess emerging oncology trends, care delivery innovations, and opportunities to enhance program outcomes at scale
- →Ensure all program activities align with federal healthcare regulations, compliance requirements, and organizational objectives
Requirements
~1 min read- MD required with oncology specialty
- Active or former VA clinical experience, direct working knowledge of VA healthcare systems and operations. Candidates with VA oncology program leadership experience within the last 3–5 years are strongly preferred.
- 15+ years of experience in healthcare, with a combination of clinical practice and program or operational leadership
- 8+ years of direct oncology experience, including exposure to large-scale program implementation, quality improvement, or transformation initiatives
- Demonstrated ability to engage and influence senior federal healthcare leadership and executive stakeholders
- Strong command of program governance, risk management, and performance measurement frameworks
- Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance; U.S. Citizenship required
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including executive-level briefing and reporting capabilities
- Direct experience practicing or leading oncology programs within the VA healthcare system
- Familiarity with VHA organizational structure, VISN operations, and federal program management frameworks
