Mid/Senior Android Engineer

You will join an extension team (The Sun) of our client - News UK. The Sun is one of the UK’s strongest brands and, like all media organisations, is having to adapt rapidly to overcome the uncertainties of a fast-moving digital world. The website of The Sun is more than a newspaper. It is an instigator, an entertainer, a cultural reference point, a finger on the pulse, a daily relationship.

As an Android Engineer you will work alongside our other engineers, product owners and stakeholders to ensure that what we build is best in class and fit for purpose. You’ll be a key component of a cross-functional team delivering quality software. You’ll interact with product owners and stakeholders, contribute to the technical conversations and ensure that what we build is best in class and fit for purpose. You’ll report to a Principal Engineer and will help him deliver on the technical strategy and tactical implementation.

• →Following best practices to ensure good code quality is maintained
• →Supporting existing, and developing new, features to support business needs across all Sun
• →Helping to define requirements and create tickets
• →Assisting with the release process to deploy new features/fixes to production
• →Leveraging AI to boost productivity

• Native Android application development with both modern and legacy systems
• Solid commercial Android development using Kotlin and Java
• Strong experience with Jetpack Compose for modern UI development
• Experience maintaining and refactoring legacy Android View-based systems
• Experience with Coroutines for reactive programming and asynchronous operations
• Firm grasp of object-oriented software development and tiered design
• An ability to deliver solutions with Android UI/UX principles in mind
• Experience with both modern Android architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI) and legacy patterns (MVP)
• Familiarity with AI tooling options and exploring their capabilities
• Experience with mobile development issues related to performance optimisation, caching, security and native components / SDKs
• TDD using testing frameworks such as Jest or Webdriver and Appium would be considered an advantage, but it is not mandatory
• Experience with NodeJS and AWS cloud platform is beneficial
