A Student Nurse Intern may only practice professional nursing under the supervision of a licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse.   “Supervision” is defined as the physical presence in the practice area or unit where the intern is providing patient care.   The intern is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process and that is within the scope of practice as determined by the state board of nursing and organizational policies and procedures. The intern is responsible and accountable for the care provided to his/her assigned patients and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team.    The intern will communicate changes in the patient’s clinical condition to the supervising licensed Vocational or Registered Nurse and the physician in regard to changes in the patient’s clinical condition including vital signs, cardiac monitoring, diagnostic results and other related symptomatology.
