Responsibilities
~2 min readAs a Buyer at Carnegie Robotics you will be an integral member of a dynamic team responsible for the design, analysis, build, testing, and troubleshooting of complex robotics and autonomy systems that must survive in extreme environments. Applications include autonomous vehicle integration and support (with partnerships in off-road, military, marine, mining, and construction environments), after-market autonomy upgrades, custom designed electronics and enclosures, and various perception sensors (stereo, LIDAR, etc).
Carnegie Robotics design efforts cover the full range of early technology demonstrators and prototypes all the way to volume manufacturing of our products at a rate of several thousands per year. The Buyer serves a special role focusing on the procurement challenges for both Engineering Projects and Production. While the Buyer’s primary responsibility is procurement, successful execution in this role will require interest and the ability to delve into Strategic Sourcing, Category Management, Negotiation and Supplier Relationship Building.
You will be supported by your Supply Chain, Inventory and Production teammates but also Finance, Technical Program Managers, discipline experts in the fields of Mechanical, Electrical, Quality, Systems, and Software Engineering. These partnerships will help you understand the desired outcomes and tradeoffs for cost, quality, and turnaround time for a given requirement, how to use your skills as a Buyer to best accomplish the desired objectives and deliverables of the multiple projects, and coordination with teammates in procurement to identify and transact with the appropriate supplier that is best suited to fulfill orders in an efficient and time effective manner.
- Serving and sourcing procurement needs for both Engineering Projects and Production Requirements
- Partnering with Engineering, Production, Planning and your Supply Chain Colleagues to understand the desired outcomes and tradeoffs for cost, quality, and turnaround time for a given situation
- Coordinating with your Supply Chain teammates to identify the appropriate supplier that is best suited to fulfill the priorities referenced above
- Managing Purchase Requisitions and issuing Purchase Orders (POs) daily, procuring various components and services needed for company projects and production orders
- Proactively managing suppliers to ensure on time delivery and quality
- Negotiating, as necessary, improved prices and terms of business with suppliers; reviewing opportunities for savings utilizing negotiation and procurement best practice tools and methods; taking advantage of increased volume leverage where possible
- Maintaining accurate purchase order data within the MRP system
- Expediting orders as needed
- Evaluating and exploring alternate sources for goods and materials; assessing quotations from potential suppliers
- Contacting suppliers to resolve price, quality, delivery or invoice issues
- Helping resolve Inventory issues and discrepancies
- Analyzing data to make proactive procurement decisions that improve supply and reduce overall cost
- Building, maintaining, and managing supplier relationships and ensuring good communication
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Engineering or another related field
- Experience working in an MRP system, preferably in an engineering/manufacturing environment
- Experience balancing demand planning to prevent stockouts and manage inventory
- History of making data based decisions
