Our client in the association and private club industry is seeking a Vice President, Communications, at their Alexandria, VA, location. This pivotal role will lead the organization’s integrated communications, content, brand, and digital member-experience strategy.

The Vice President will position our client as the authoritative voice and knowledge platform for the private club community while advancing membership growth, engagement, advocacy influence, and non-dues revenue. The position oversees publications, media relations, executive communications, marketing, digital channels, multimedia content, and knowledge resources and serves as the business and content owner for their AI-enabled member services. Working across advocacy, education, membership, events, and external partners, the Vice President transforms their expertise into timely, personalized, and scalable resources while maintaining appropriate editorial, data, intellectual property, and AI governance standards.

This is a hybrid role with 4 required in-office days at the Alexandria, VA office. This position has a target salary of $140,000 to $150,000.

About the role

Critical parts of the job
Strategic Communications Leadership
  • Build on an integrated communications, content, marketing and digital strategy aligned with the company’s strategic plan, membership goals, advocacy priorities and revenue objectives.
  • Serve as a strategic adviser to the President & CEO and senior management team on organizational positioning, reputation, member engagement and emerging communications opportunities and risks.
  • Strengthen their position as the authoritative voice, trusted knowledge resource and innovation leader for the private club community.
  • Lead communications planning for major partnerships, organizational change, industry disruption and other matters affecting NCA’s future direction.
Editorial and Production
  • Function as chief editor and publisher for a variety of publications, periodicals, research studies and reports produced by the company.
  • Develop and implement editorial plans and production schedules, brand management and design for periodicals and publications, including content research, development and outsourcing.
  • Help develop, administer and publish various research studies.
  • Assign features, articles and monographs, including supervision of staff writers, contract writers and constituents in the field.
  • Oversee production of all publications and periodicals, reports and various communications.
  • Manage design, publishing and mail vendor relationships.
  • Ensure graphic quality and editorial consistency of the company’s published materials.
Communications and Executive Positioning
  • Build on the company’s media strategy, including oversight of the public relations firm, press outreach, press releases, and campaigns that advance the organization’s mission, brand identity, and policy interests.
  • Lead executive communications and thought-leadership activities for the President & CEO and other designated company leaders, including speeches, articles, presentations, media preparation and video scripts.
  • Write and edit material for their publications and communications programs.
Digital Member Experience and AI-Enabled Services
  • Lead the strategy and continuous improvement of the integrated digital member experience across the website, member portal, Resource Center, email, social media, webinars, on-demand education, publications, and multimedia channels.
  • Establish disciplined processes for adding, reviewing, updating and retiring the source material used by NICA and other AI-enabled services.
  • Coordinate subject-matter review of AI-generated information and ensure that consequential external communications receive appropriate human approval.
  • Manage external technology partners against agreed requirements for performance, security, permissions, analytics, content portability and NCA ownership of its knowledge assets and product roadmap.
Knowledge Management
  • Oversee development and maintenance of the company’s knowledge database and Resource Center to maximize their value to members and support accurate AI-enabled services.
  • Provide consulting and information resources upon request.
  • Identify ways to increase knowledge of issues affecting customers and practical approaches for addressing them.
  • Oversee their websites and manage development of content, including microsites, the online bookstore and education programs.
Marketing, Growth, Advertising and Analytics
  • Build on integrated marketing strategies that support recruitment, retention, events, education, sponsorships, partnerships, publications, and other revenue-producing products and services.
  • Use audience segmentation, marketing automation, personalization and performance analytics to improve engagement and conversion.
  • Oversee marketing activities for their products, services, and publication sales.
AI Governance, Content Integrity and Risk Management
  • Establish and administer standards for accuracy, source attribution, content provenance, privacy, confidentiality, access controls, copyright, licensing and appropriate disclosure of AI-generated content.
  • Maintain documented testing, human-review, correction and escalation procedures for AI-enabled communications.
  • Coordinate with counsel, technology advisers and subject-matter staff on legal, cybersecurity, intellectual-property and reputational risks.
Finance and Administration
  • Develop and recommend the Communications Department's revenue and expense budget.
  • Administer departmental budgets and monitor return on communications, marketing and digital investments.
  • Maintain copyrights on all published association materials.
  • Negotiate and manage communications, production, research, marketing and technology vendor relationships.
Skills, Education & Abilities
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, or 4-year equivalent, in business, marketing, communications, public relations or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, publishing, digital strategy, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience managing staff, vendors, contractors, agencies, or cross-functional teams.
  • Progressive strategic communications and editorial/production experience in print and digital publishing environments. Association, nonprofit, public affairs, marketing and advertising experience is strongly preferred.
  • Highly organized and experienced in applying staff, contractor, agency and technology resources effectively across multiple priorities, deadlines and platforms.
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, proofreading, executive communications and editorial judgment.
  • High proficiency in Mac O.S., Microsoft Office and contemporary content-management, analytics, collaboration, marketing-automation, multimedia and AI-enabled production tools.
  • Experience with digital products, knowledge management, analytics, AI-enabled services, executive positioning, advocacy communications, or crisis communications is strongly preferred. Familiarity with the golf or private club industry is a plus.
The Nice to Haves
  • Experience as a member of a private club (country, athletic, and yacht clubs, for example) or a deep understanding of how they operate is helpful
