Job Description

The Sr. Manager, Data Center Engineering will provide technical leadership and direction for our portfolio of data center projects in all phases starting with concept design including test-fit all the way through commissioning and operations. This role requires deep technical expertise in Data Center Design across mechanical and electrical systems and should also be familiar with civil, structural and architecture considerations. It also requires strong project management and leadership skills to drive cross-functional teams and external partners toward successful outcomes.

The Sr Manager, Data Center Engineering will report directly to Sr. Director of Data Center Engineering working closely with Copia’s cross-functional teams in an individual contributor capacity.
  • Lead the design of AI/HPC enable datacenters from concept to operations including establishment of a standard design for full-turn key data centers and well as core and shell only builds ranging from 100 MW to 300 MW IT.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all stakeholders including internal teams, contractors, regulators, and customers.
  • Be technical POC with tenants and development partners throughout the data center development lifecycle.
  • Manage project lifecycle activities: concept design, test-fit, permitting, engineering/design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning.
  • Oversee and review engineering design packages, ensuring compliance with industry codes, environmental regulations, and company standards.
  • Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and risk management plans.
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, project managers, and contractors.
  • Ensure health, safety, and environmental standards are integrated into all phases of the project.
  • Coordinate with grid operators, regulatory agencies, and permitting authorities to secure approvals and ensure compliance.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying lessons learned and best practices across projects.
  • Track advancing technologies to maintain relevance in the Data Center space and to review with Copia internal team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written correspondence.
  • Highly driven with problem-solving abilities, integrity, and strong work ethic.

  • Ability to work effectively within a rapidly changing organization.
  • Demonstrated collaborative partnerships with peers, management, and vendors.
  • Resourcefulness and polite persistence.
  • 10+ years’ professional experience in Data Center Design, including both building and campus design for Hyperscale Data Centers
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred) or licensed architect
  • Strong knowledge of heat absorption and rejections technologies as well as electrical system redundancy configurations from substations through medium voltage systems
  • Proven track record managing large, complex engineering/construction projects.
  • Excellent project management skills, with experience in schedule, budget, and risk management.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with senior leadership, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to work in the Salt Lake City, UT or Dana Point, CA office a minimum of 3 days per week.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
