Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities Management and the immediate supervision of the Supervising Building Service Engineer, maintains, services, repairs, and inspects heating, ventilating, mechanical, and air conditioning systems, and the mechanical, plumbing, electrical and electronic systems associated with the decentralized utilities centers located throughout the campus and the Central Plant facility.


Responsibilities

  • Responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing and inspecting heating, air conditioning, water treatment and ventilating equipment (i.e. boilers, chillers, condensers, compressors, circulating water pumps, blower vans, valves, ducting, gauge).
  • Tests, adjusts and calibrates heating and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electronic and/or pneumatic control instruments and systems.
  • Maintains and inspects, diagnoses and makes emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, air and oil distribution systems.
  • Will be called upon to periodically adjust air handling equipment to achieve air flow, temperature and humidity balances for individual rooms, building area or buildings.
  • Repairs and replaces bearing, shafts, seals, rings, and electrical wiring and installs mechanical system parts, gauges, valves, and pipes which require the application of skills and knowledge equivalent to the journey level in one or more of the basic trades worked.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,998 (Step 1) - $8,737 (Step 20) per month.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong working knowledge of HVAC systems for both central and decentralized building plants, including building temperature control systems with electric, electronic, and pneumatic controls, along with up‑to‑date facilities maintenance practices covering plumbing systems, electric motor control operations, and water treatment systems. They demonstrate excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interface with the university community, interact positively with co‑workers and supervisors, and communicate in a consistently civil manner, while maintaining a professional image and demeanor. A background in trade‑related higher education is desirable, including CFC certification, as well as experience working in a university or institutional setting. The candidate is committed to maintaining a safe environment and contributing to a collaborative, respectful campus community.

• Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems required.

• Four years of experience is preferred.


• BOC Level I & II Certification is preferred.

• A valid California driver's license is required.

Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on University business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
