PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems.\r\n

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard HVACR trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating and refrigeration;�\r\n Operates, maintains, repairs, installs, modifies and assembles air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems which may use Freon or chilled water for air cooling means and air or water for condenser means;�\r\n Determines required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas;�\r\n Uses and interprets a psychometric chart;�\r\n Controls and measures air flow, room air changes and room pressurizing;�\r\n Monitors computerized control systems;�\r\n Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks;�\r\n Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers;�\r\n Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;�\r\n Keeps necessary records;�\r\n In smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area;�\r\n May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;�\r\n May install, modify, repair and assemble electrical or pneumatic controls for this type of equipment;�\r\n May inspect and repair steam traps fed by main system at various locations;�\r\n May remove pipe insulation materials associated with repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods;�\r\n May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;�\r\n May operate heavy equipment;�\r\n May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports;�\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n\r\n\r\n Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard HVACR trade practices;�\r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;�\r\n oral and written communication skills;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n prepare estimates and keep shop records;�\r\n utilize computer software.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trades.\r\n\r\n\r\nNOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

\r\n\r\n Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.\r\n At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.\r\n At other state agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.\r\n Experience performing technical duties within the HVACR trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n\r\n Connecticut HVAC License (D1, D2, S1, or S2)\r\n EPA Univeral Certification (Section 608)\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n University of Connecticut: Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.\r\n\r\n\r\n

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.\r\n

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.\r\n A physical examination may be required.\r\n\r\n\r\n

WORKING CONDITIONS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.\r\n The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.\r\n\r\n\r\n
