Data Center Technician II

Everforth ECS is seeking a Data Center Technician II to work in our Pocatello, ID office.   

Responsible for the installation of various types of Information Technology (IT) hardware devices and cabling in a data center environment. This position requires the intermediate knowledge of data center hardware and systems to include the ability to interpret the manufacturer’s guides for installation into data center racks, the understanding of space, power, and cooling requirements, as well as mounting hardware specifications.  

Infrastructure Preparation and Systems Analysis

• Evaluate data center infrastructure requirements including rack space, network connectivity, power, cooling, and cabling; incorporate systems analysis to determine hardware, software, and infrastructure specifications based on operational and technical requirements.
• Analyze data center infrastructure requirements and develop technical solutions for complex server, storage, network, power, cooling, and cabling environments.
• Evaluate alternative hardware and infrastructure solutions and determine appropriate configurations based on system requirements.
• Exercise independent technical judgment through conversations that help determine system requirements, resolving complex infrastructure issues, and selecting appropriate technical solutions.

Infrastructure Design, Configuration, and Validation

• Participate in meaningful conversations involving design, configuration, test, and modify data center IT infrastructure and system configurations.
• Test and validate infrastructure designs and configurations prior to production implementation.
• Serve as a technical resource during discussions related to data center infrastructure design, integration, configuration, and optimization.

Provisioning, Cabling, and Installation

• Provision the cabling, floor cutouts, rack rails, and mounting hardware for IT devices including servers, switches, routers, power distribution units, KVM components, fiber and copper cabling.
• Perform end-to-end installation of patch cables (fiber and copper), management cabling, and cross-connect cabling.
• Possess the ability to perform copper and fiber communications cable installations and terminations, using test equipment to certify terminations to manufacturer standards.
• Perform hands-on installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment replacement as necessary to implement and validate approved technical solutions (replaces earlier simpler installation/troubleshooting wording).

Troubleshooting, Maintenance, and Operations

• Analyze complex infrastructure problems, identify root causes, and implement technical solutions; perform troubleshooting such as reboots, visual system checks, and component replacement (fiber, connectors, iDRAC, PDUs) with systems engineers.
• Keep all data center infrastructure and IT equipment in operating condition consistent with OEM requirements, performing corrective, adaptive, and preventative maintenance.
• Monitor data center IT and environmental systems for failures and coordinate repairs or replacements with vendors or technicians.
• Provide timely problem resolution for IT and system hardware incidents

Configuration Management, Documentation, and Technical Standards

• Follow labeling standards and maintain configuration changes and inventory records using Excel, SharePoint, or DCIM tools.
• Participate in the process of developing and documenting system architecture, configuration specifications, installation standards, and technical procedures.
• Assist in developing and managing hardware inventory tracking systems using databases and scanning devices.
• Manage, store, issue, document, and maintain inventories of expendable and non-expendable parts, tools, and cabling.
• Generate and interpret wiring and cabling diagrams using Visio and CADD; maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office (Project, Excel, Word).
• Author step-by-step solutions for Tier 1 and Tier 2 support, contributing to knowledge transfer using industry best practices.

General Data Center Operations

• Adhere to all data center safety rules, policies, and installation standards.
• Perform operational support tasks such as uncrating/unboxing equipment, disposing of packaging materials, and maintaining clear walkways.
• Support ongoing knowledge transition to government staff through training and hands-on assistance.

• Must have a current Top-Secret Clearance with the capability of obtaining SCI / CI-Poly to meet contract requirement.  

• A minimum of three years of data center hardware and cable installation experience.   

• Possess knowledge of National Standards as pertaining to Data Center IT infrastructure including Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) Installer 2 for both Copper (INSTC) and Fiber (INSTF), TIA-606 cable labeling standard and TIA-942 requirements for Data Centers.   

• Current industry foundational technology certification (such as CompTIA Server+, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Schneider Electric DCCA, EPI CDCE), or vendor-specific technician level certification (such as Cisco Certified Technician, Dell PowerEdge Foundations), or higher required. 

Physical Demands of the Data Center Hardware Technician II position  

The nature of the Hardware Technician duties has physical demands such as pulling, cabling, lifting, kneeling, crawling, etc. As such, the Contractor shall:  

• Required to lift IT equipment during installation and removal along with installing communications cabling under a raised floor structure.  

• Able to lift to 50 pounds for short periods of time.  

• Use cable termination equipment, test equipment, power tools (Sawzall, drill, crimping tools, etc.) for the tasks as required for the position.  

• Use tools to include wrenches, screw drivers, and power tools.  

• Operate manual forklifts and data center rack lifts as required for the tasks for the position.  

• Wear safety gear (e.g., safety shoes, goggles, glasses, hearing protection) while performing tasks.
