The L3 Backup & Recovery Engineer is a senior technical resource responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and support of enterprise backup and recovery platforms, with primary focus on Cohesity DataProtect and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (IBM Spectrum Protect). This role provides expert‑level troubleshooting, leads incident resolution, supports DR readiness, and acts as a technical escalation point for L1/L2 teams and client environments.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- Serve as L3 escalation for complex backup, restore, replication, and DR issues across Cohesity DataProtect and Tivoli Storage Manager environments
- Perform advanced root cause analysis for backup failures, performance issues, data corruption, and recovery incidents
- Lead and execute critical restores (file, VM, database, application‑level, and full system recovery)
- Support 24x7 shifts (including weekends and holidays) with rotations and major incident bridges as required
- Maintain enterprise backup architectures using Cohesity DataProtect and Tivoli Storage Manager
- Configure and manage:
- Backup policies, schedules, and SLAs
- Retention, replication, and archival strategies (on‑prem and cloud targets)
- Encryption, immutability, and ransomware protection features
- Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, and storage optimization
- Lead platform upgrades, migrations, and version lifecycle management
- Participate in and lead DR tests, audits, and recovery simulations
- Ensure compliance with RPO/RTO, security, and regulatory requirements
- Support data protection strategies for hybrid, cloud, and virtualized environments
- Automate backup operations and reporting using scripts and native tooling where applicable
- Identify opportunities to standardize, optimize, and reduce operational risk
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to L1/L2 engineers
- Act as a technical advisor to clients and internal teams
- Participate in root‑cause reviews and technical design discussions
- Create and maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and knowledge articles
- Cohesity DataProtect (advanced administration, troubleshooting, restores, replication)
- IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (IBM Spectrum Protect)
- Enterprise backup concepts: incremental/full, deduplication, replication
- ServiceNow for ITSM
- Virtualization: VMware and Hyper‑V
- Operating Systems: Windows Server, Linux (RHEL, SUSE, AIX preferred)
- Databases & applications: SQL Server, Oracle, file systems (preferred)
- Object storage (S3‑compatible, Azure Blob – preferred)
Requirements
~1 min read- 7–10+ years in enterprise backup or data protection roles
- Strong experience administering Cohesity Data Protect and Tivoli Storage Manager / IBM Spectrum Protect
- Experience in managed services or large enterprise environments preferred
- Relevant certifications (preferred but not required):
- Cohesity certification
- IBM Spectrum Protect certification
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to lead during high‑severity incidents
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Comfortable working in client‑facing and globally distributed teams
