Design real bridges before you graduate. 

GAI Consultants is hiring a Structural Engineering Intern for our Fishers, Indiana office. You will work under licensed Professional Engineers on bridge, culvert, and transportation structure projects for INDOT, counties, and municipalities across Indiana. This is production work on active projects, not a shadowing program, and interns leave with calculations, drawings, and field experience they can point to in an interview. 

As a structural engineering intern, you will support bridge design and structural analysis tasks including load calculations, reinforced concrete and steel design, retaining wall and box culvert design, and the preparation of construction plans, specifications, and quantity estimates. You will assist with bridge inspections and field observation of construction, help review contractor shop drawings and submittals, and produce 2D and 3D design layouts. This is a strong fit for civil engineering students and structural engineering students pursuing a transportation, bridge design, or structural design career path, including those planning to sit for the FE exam and pursue EIT certification. 

• →Perform computations for the structural analysis and design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other structural components. 

• →Assist in preparing construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents. 

• →Support design and layout of project components in 2D and 3D. 

• →Participate in assessments and inspections of bridges, culverts, and other project components. 

• →Observe construction in the field for adherence to construction plans and specifications. 

• →Help review contractor shop drawings and submittals during construction support. 

• →Assist with cost estimating, reports, and technical memos. 

• →Attend project meetings with internal teams and, where appropriate, external clients. 

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Civil or Structural Engineering at an ABET/EAC accredited school. 

• Completed coursework in statics, mechanics of materials, or structural analysis. 

• Working proficiency in Microsoft Excel and clear written communication. 

• Valid driver's license for travel to project sites. 

• Able to work on-site in Fishers, Indiana for the duration of the internship. 

• Legally authorized to work in the United States. GAI Consultants does not provide sponsorship for this position. 

• Rising junior, senior, or graduate student. 

• Exposure to MicroStation, OpenBridge, AutoCAD, AASHTOWare, or MathCAD. 

• Coursework in reinforced concrete design, steel design, or bridge engineering. 

• Involvement in ASCE, SEI, a Steel Bridge Team, or a concrete canoe team. 

• Direct mentorship from licensed Professional Engineers and Project Managers, rather than being assigned to a general intern pool. 

• Exposure to design, field, and construction phases within a single internship. 

• Work on bridge replacements and transportation structures with visible, lasting community impact. 

• A defined path to full-time Junior Engineer consideration after graduation.

This internship is based on-site at our Fishers, Indiana office. 

• Term: Winter 2026 and Summer 2027

• Schedule: Part-time during the academic term, scheduled around your class commitments 

• Occasional travel to project sites within Indiana. 

Compensation 

$25.00 per hour.  GAI Consultants pays all engineering interns an hourly wage. This is a paid internship.
