Nice to Have
~1 min readThe energy transition involves numerous upheavals in the way electricity grids are designed and function. Combustion turbines are thus considered as a controllable production source, while offering prospects for decarbonization (via the use of hydrogen or carbon capture).
The GE Vernova Gas Power plant in Belfort designs and builds these high-power turbines (40 MW-500 MW) and is the global center of excellence for developing their flexibility and connection to various power grids around the world.
Our challenge is to electrify the world, while decarbonizing it.
Through this mission, you will have the opportunity to join the gas turbine engineering organization and more particularly the “Grid Frequency Response” team in charge of the flexibility, robustness and resilience of power plants. Our team is also responsible for making decarbonizing solutions more flexible, such as the use of low-carbon fuels (hydrogen, biofuel) and the capture and sequestration of carbon emissions.
Our main challenge is to meet the requirements of electrical network codes by demonstrating the flexibility of gas turbines to support these networks in the event of failure. This demonstration can take the form of simulations based on complex models or through on-site tests to demonstrate compliance with the various requirements required.
Two first missions resulted in the development of a Python interface connected to an SQL database, allowing the visualization and analysis of test data collected during previous network test campaigns. Some analysis features specific to the “Grid Frequency Response” team have also been developed.
This mission is part of the continuity of the development of this tool. In particular, it aims to continue to feed the database and develop new automated analysis functionalities that will enable teams to be fed and future test campaigns prepared.
Your mission will be divided into several main axes
Getting started with the existing Python interface and structure, as well as the associated documentation (Back end program, Guidelines, official reviews), collecting user feedback and drawing up the specifications for the new version including the new features to be included (~ 1 month)
Expansion of the database and development of simple functionalities (~1 month)
Adaptation of the existing interface to identified needs (for example integration of numerical simulations and comparison with real test data, creation of an automatic test report for our customers,...) with the support of digital teams (~ 3 months)
Validation of the interface with the desk of chief engineers and future users (~2 weeks)
Presentation and deployment to local and global teams (~2 weeks)
Since the mission is based on ongoing work, it can be adjusted according to the progress and profile of the candidate.
The mission will take place in Belfort in France and will be attached to the Grid Frequency Response engineering teams of GE Vernova's Gas Power subsidiary. Interactions with international teams (gas turbine system, control, digital control, modeling, etc.) are expected.
The mission corresponds to an end-of-study/gap internship and would take place over 6 months with a desired start between February and April 2027.
- Definition of the specifications to gather the new needs of interface users
- Operational Python V3.0 interface (extended SQL base, automated analysis module, new features)
- Validation of the interface with available test or simulation data
- Complete documentation (specifications, technical guide, user guide)
- Two official technical reviews as part of GE Vernova's internal processes (review of the scope at the beginning and review of the results at the end of the internship)
At the end of this experience, you will have acquired skills in:
- Design and operation of power plants, energy transition of electric transport networks
- Project management in a highly changing environment
- Collaboration in an international context (mainly in English)
- Understanding of the transitional phenomena allowing the stability of electrical networks for high-power turbine technologies.
- Monitoring of development quality processes through review and validation.
- General engineer with a focus on thermal or electrical engineering, or data processing or data science engineer with electrical or energy expertise.
- Intellectual curiosity.
- Motivation to work in an international and multidisciplinary context.
- Autonomy, ability to analyze and summarize.
- Creativity, strength of proposal.
- Fluent English obligatory (written + oral)
- First experience in Python programming (internship, project,...) and data processing required.
