Position Title: Black Island Domestic Support Coordinator
Location: Black Island Telecommunications Facility, Antarctica
Reports To: Black Island Telecommunications Facility Manager
About the Role
The Black Island Domestic Support Coordinator is a critical member of a two-person team responsible for maintaining operations and domestic support at the Black Island Telecommunications Facility. This remote Antarctic station plays a vital role in providing backup off-continent data communications and television services to McMurdo Station, Antarctica.
The role demands exceptional adaptability, teamwork, and resourcefulness in a highly remote and challenging environment. The successful candidate will coordinate logistical and domestic operations, maintain the facility, and ensure the comfort and functionality of the station for its two permanent residents and visiting personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordination and Reporting
- Coordinate McMurdo staff, maintenance personnel, and distinguished visitor site visits to Black Island.
- Communicate daily population reports for Black Island to relevant authorities at McMurdo Station.
- Food Services
- Plan and prepare meals for station residents and visitors (up to 10 people at a time).
- Maintain inventory of the food cache, including ordering and restocking as needed.
- Ensure the availability of fresh water by collecting and processing snow for drinking and cooking purposes.
- Station Maintenance and Cleanliness
- Maintain the cleanliness of the station, including common areas and shared living quarters.
- Coordinates transportation of laundry to McMurdo Station for station staff.
- Monitor propane tank levels and coordinate resupply as necessary.
- Team Collaboration
- Work closely with the Black Island Telecommunications Facility Manager to support facility maintenance and domestic operations.
- Assist with snow removal, minor repairs, and operational tasks as required.
- Serve as "remote hands" as needed to assist communications experts located in McMurdo or Denver with maintenance tasks.
- Replace and manage human waste containers as needed.
- Visitor and Station Support
- Ensure smooth operations during visits from staff and distinguished guests by coordinating logistics and maintaining a welcoming environment.
- Adapt to dynamic operational demands, prioritizing tasks effectively.
Qualifications and Skills
- Ability to thrive in a remote and isolated environment with shared bunkhouse-style living arrangements.
- Excellent organizational and coordination skills.
- Experience in meal planning, preparation, and food inventory management.
- Strong communication skills for daily reporting and coordination.
- Proactive problem-solving ability and resourcefulness in challenging conditions.
- Physical fitness and willingness to perform manual labor, such as snow removal and equipment maintenance.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a small team in high-pressure, variable conditions.
- Familiarity with basic maintenance tasks, particularly in a facility setting, is an asset.
Living and Working Conditions
Black Island is a remote Antarctic facility with extreme weather conditions and limited resources. The living quarters are shared in a bunkhouse-style arrangement with personally maintained temporary dividers for privacy. The position requires flexibility, adaptability, and a positive attitude toward communal living and work in a demanding environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in remote or austere environments.
- Experience working in facilities management, domestic support, or logistics.
- Knowledge of or experience in Antarctica or similar remote areas.
- This is a full-time, seasonal position located in Antarctica.
- All expenses paid while on-ice; meals, lodging, medical, gear, travel to and from Antarctica.
- Performance Period: Oct2025-Feb2026
