The Ice Rink School-Day Supervisor provides consistent supervision, safety oversight, and student support throughout the Gilmour Academy Ice Rink and surrounding facilities. This position monitors student activity, supports the appropriate and responsible use of the facility, manages the student sign-in/out system, and assists with SmartPass procedures as needed. The supervisor serves as a visible and supportive adult presence, promoting a safe, respectful environment while ensuring students remain accountable for their actions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide active, consistent supervision of all students using the Ice Rink during the school day.

  • Maintain a visible presence throughout the rink, monitor student activity, and ensure responsible use of the facility.

  • Reinforce Gilmour Academy expectations for student behavior, safety, and respect.

  • Promptly address student concerns and inappropriate behavior and communicate significant concerns to the Dean of Students and/or Director of Upper School.

Safety and Emergency Response

  • Follow the rink’s emergency action plan and respond promptly to injuries or safety incidents.

  • Report facility hazards or maintenance issues to rink personnel

Facility Monitoring

The supervisor will routinely monitor all student-accessible areas of the Ice Rink, including the main lobby, ice area, locker rooms, restrooms, and common areas. Locker room and restroom supervision follows Gilmour’s safeguarding policies.

The Weight Room is staffed separately and maintains its own supervision. The Ice Rink Supervisor may provide additional support to the Weight Room when circumstances require it.

  • Curate and maintain the Ice Rink student sign-out list.

  • Track student arrivals and departures to ensure all students are accounted for.

  • Support appropriate rink use during students' available periods.

  • Participate in SmartPass monitoring and procedures when necessary.

  • Identify patterns or concerns related to student use of the facility and communicate them to Upper School administration.

The supervisor helps facilitate appropriate student use of the rink as a school-day resource, including independent study, athletic and fitness activities, meetings, and other approved purposes. The supervisor ensures students use the space responsibly while meeting their academic obligations.

Communication and Collaboration

The Ice Rink School-Day Supervisor will work closely with:

  • Director of Upper School

  • Dean of Students

  • Head of Hockey

  • Faculty and staff

  • Athletic and rink personnel

  • Weight Room staff

  • Other members of the Gilmour Academy community as needed

The supervisor is expected to communicate proactively regarding student concerns, facility issues, safety concerns, scheduling conflicts, or situations requiring administrative attention.

  • Help create an environment that reflects Gilmour Academy's mission, values, and unique culture.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Experience working with or supervising students in a school, recreational, athletic, or similar setting preferred.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff.

  • Dependable and able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Successful completion of a background check

  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or willingness to obtain certification prior to starting.

  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and respond calmly and effectively to student concerns and behaviors.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in a cold rink environment.
