General Contractor in Newport News, VA is seeking a General Foreman who is committed to performing and maintaining the quality work standards established by Hampton Roads Contracting, Inc.

 

About Us:

Hampton Roads Contracting, Inc. is a General Contractor in the Commonwealth of Virginia. HRC has been in business since 1983, primarily performing projects of varying scope in industrial environments such as Newport News Shipbuilding. 


Description and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the General Foreman supervises and coordinates on-site construction activities to ensure that all projects are completed safely, on time, and in accordance with required specifications. The General Foreman works closely with project managers, subcontractors, and labor crews to maintain efficient workflows and high standards of quality.


This role oversees In-house crews performing various types of work, including:

  • Concrete work (walls, slabs, and footers) and concrete construction.
  • Trenching and excavation work for the installation of civil structures, concrete construction, utility installation, and other general construction.
  • Heavy equipment operation for excavation, material handling, and site grading to include excavators and other earth moving equipment, rollers, compactors, aerial equipment, forklifts, cranes, and heavy trucks.
  • Steel construction, demolition, and modification, including hot work.


Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of various construction projects, from start to finish, ensuring that work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, crew members, and project stakeholders.
  • Review Foreman records of daily time entries, daily work activities, and materials used for accuracy.
  • Help enforce company policies, procedures, and industry standards to maintain a productive and positive work environment.
  • Lead and supervise construction crews, subcontractors, and vendors by providing guidance and ensuring that work is executed in accordance with the project’s design and quality standards.
  • Develop and implement daily work schedules, adjusting timelines as necessary to meet project deadlines.
  • Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations, including conducting safety meetings and inspections to minimize risks on-site.
  • Monitor and manage project progress, identifying potential issues and delays early, and take corrective action as needed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of work, materials, and equipment to ensure quality control and compliance with project specifications.
  • Ensure proper documentation of inspections, safety audits, and corrective action.
  • Train and mentor site personnel to foster a productive and collaborative team environment.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback for crew members. 
  • Perform supervisory duties on active construction job sites, requiring regular on-site presence and the ability to effectively operate in hazardous environments, including uneven terrain and high-risk conditions.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required, along with the ability to operate company vehicles safely.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and other company software.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8–12 hours per day). 
  • Ability to work on and navigate uneven surfaces on hazardous construction sites in a shipyard environment. 
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials or equipment as needed to support job site activities.
  • Ability to work on and navigate uneven surfaces and at heights.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, steel decks, gangways, and other access points to various work locations. 
  • Ability to maintain balance and coordination in active construction and shipyard
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including but not limited to: 
    • Extreme heat and cold 
    • Rain, wind, and humidity 
    • Dusty or noisy conditions 
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and task-specific requirements. 

 

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily on active construction sites, typically in a shipyard environment.
  • Exposure to moving machinery, loud noise, and construction-related hazards.
  • Work may occur indoors or outdoors depending on project needs.
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, cranes, moving machinery, and vehicle traffic.
  • Work may occur at heights, over or near water, and in confined or restricted spaces.
  • Exposure to high noise levels, dust, fumes, and airborne particles associated with construction and marine work.
  • Work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
  • Surfaces may be uneven, slippery, or unstable (e.g., steel decks, scaffolding, gangways).
  • Work may require the use of ladders, scaffolds, and temporary structures.

Education & Experience

  • Previous experience as a General Foreman or Superintendent and extensive applicable knowledge in the field of work required.

The General Foreman position is fundamentally managerial and is actively involved in all aspects of the construction process. This position is primarily field-based, requiring regular presence on construction job sites.
