Type of Employment: This is a non-exempt, non-supervisory lead accounting, full-time position, onsite, reporting to the Accounting Manager

Compensation: $35.45 per hour

 

The Opportunity:

Homer Electric Association (HEA) is a member-owned electric utility serving the central and southern areas of the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska! We are excited to be seeking a General Accountant to join our team at our Homer, Alaska, location.

 

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Draft, publish, and maintain the department's monthly and annual closing schedules and confirm closing tasks assigned to the Payroll Accountant, Accounts Payable Accountant, Consumer (Revenue) Accountant, and Plant Accountants are completed on schedule. Escalate delays or resource gaps to the Accounting Manager.
  • Be responsible for maintaining general ledger records in an audit ready status and for completing such additional audit reports as may be required to respond to audits involving all general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain working knowledge of other accounting functions to provide comprehensive back-up for payroll/general, payables/general, and consumer accountants.
  • Reconcile the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers. Perform detailed account analysis to identify and resolve discrepancies, unusual balances, or report errors. Works on special projects as requested.
  • Prepare and review journal entries in accordance with the chart of accounts and the RUS Uniform System of Accounts.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial and statistical reports of the Association

 

What makes you a good fit:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One of the following combinations of education and experience is required:
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field; or
    • Associate's degree in Accounting or a closely related field, and three (3) years of qualifying general accounting experience; or
    • Seven (7) years of qualifying general accounting experience, in lieu of a degree
    • Qualifying general accounting experience means experience that regularly and substantially involve one or more of the following:
      • Recording or classifying financial transactions within a general ledger or subsidiary ledger, including journal entry preparation or posting; or
      • Reconciling general ledger or subsidiary records to support documentation, and researching and resolving discrepancies identified through that reconciliation; or
      • Preparing or assisting in the preparation of financial statements, account analyses, or supporting schedules used in financial reporting; or
      • Applying accounting principles to classify transactions, accruals, or adjusting entries in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Must submit a valid Alaska Driver's license within 90 days of hire date, and maintain a good driving record
