The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) provides strategic and operational leadership across Sales and Marketing, translating corporate growth objectives into disciplined commercial execution and sustainable business results.
The role is responsible for driving revenue growth, profitability, market expansion, portfolio performance, customer impact, and overall effectiveness of Sales and Marketing operations. The CCO establishes clear priorities, performance expectations, operating rhythms, and accountability across commercial teams while ensuring strong alignment between sales execution and marketing strategy.
The position works closely with Commercial Excellence, Supply Chain and Fulfillment, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Finance, HROD, and other enabling functions to ensure effective cross-functional execution while maintaining clear functional accountabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Commercial Strategy & Leadership
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for Sales and Marketing functions in alignment with corporate objectives.
- Translate business strategy and growth priorities into integrated commercial plans with clear accountabilities, timelines, and measurable outcomes.
- Establish commercial priorities across business units, brands, products, customer segments, and markets.
- Ensure strong alignment between Sales and Marketing on customer priorities, brand strategy, field execution, campaigns, product launches, and resource allocation.
- Establish a disciplined operating rhythm through regular business reviews, performance tracking, action planning, escalation, and follow-through.
- Identify opportunities to accelerate growth, strengthen market position, improve customer engagement, and enhance commercial effectiveness.
2. Sales Leadership & Performance
- Drive achievement of sales revenue, profitability, market growth, and execution objectives across business units.
- Lead Sales leaders in developing and executing effective sales strategies, territory plans, customer coverage models, and account development initiatives.
- Monitor sales performance, territory productivity, customer coverage, pipeline visibility, and execution quality.
- Strengthen sales planning, forecasting, target setting, and field execution.
- Ensure effective implementation of sales priorities, customer engagement strategies, call plans, and account action plans.
- Review performance gaps and ensure timely corrective actions are implemented.
- Build strong accountability among Sales leaders for target achievement, productivity, coaching, execution quality, and team performance.
3. Marketing & Brand Leadership
- Oversee effective execution of marketing strategies aligned with portfolio, brand, customer, and corporate growth objectives.
- Monitor brand performance, portfolio growth, campaign effectiveness, product launches, and return on marketing investments.
- Ensure marketing strategies translate into clear and actionable field priorities and measurable commercial outcomes.
- Strengthen collaboration between Brand/Marketing and Sales teams to improve customer engagement, demand generation, customer acquisition, and brand conversion.
- Evaluate and optimize marketing resource allocation based on strategic priorities, business potential, and expected return.
- Ensure timely execution and post-implementation evaluation of major campaigns, product launches, customer programs, and other marketing initiatives.
4. Commercial Performance Management
- Establish Sales and Marketing objectives, scorecards, KPIs, and performance indicators aligned with business strategy.
- Conduct regular commercial performance reviews using sales, customer, market, brand, and execution data.
- Utilize dashboards, analytics, and management reports to identify performance gaps, risks, and growth opportunities.
- Drive timely decision-making, accountability, and corrective action across commercial teams.
- Lead initiatives that improve sales productivity, marketing effectiveness, customer experience, execution quality, and profitability.
- Promote a data-driven and results-oriented commercial culture.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Commercial Excellence on salesforce effectiveness, CRM discipline, sales analytics, segmentation, territory design, capability building, training, and related initiatives.
- Provide business requirements and execution feedback to Commercial Excellence while maintaining its independent functional accountability.
- Partner with Supply Chain and Fulfillment on demand requirements, product availability, launch requirements, inventory priorities, and customer service concerns.
- Coordinate with Medical Affairs and Regulatory Affairs to ensure commercial activities and promotional execution comply with applicable scientific, regulatory, quality, and company requirements.
- Work closely with Finance on sales forecasting, budgeting, profitability analysis, commercial investments, and business performance.
- Partner with HROD on organizational capability, leadership development, succession planning, talent management, and organizational effectiveness.
- Resolve cross-functional execution issues through appropriate governance and escalation mechanisms.
6. Financial & Resource Management
- Oversee Sales and Marketing operating budgets and ensure resources are aligned with strategic business priorities.
- Drive productivity and cost effectiveness without compromising customer impact, execution quality, or compliance.
- Evaluate commercial investments and marketing expenditures based on expected business impact and return.
- Participate in annual business planning, budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation.
- Balance short-term commercial performance with sustainable long-term growth.
7. Leadership & Organizational Development
- Lead, coach, and develop Sales and Marketing leaders to strengthen accountability, strategic thinking, execution discipline, and people leadership.
- Build a strong leadership pipeline and succession plan for critical commercial positions.
- Develop organizational capabilities required to support business growth and evolving market needs.
- Foster a culture of customer focus, collaboration, performance ownership, innovation, agility, and continuous improvement.
- Promote employee engagement and alignment with organizational values, mission, and strategic priorities.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Management, Pharmacy, or a related field.
- MBA, postgraduate degree, or relevant executive education is an advantage.
- 10–15+ years of progressive commercial experience, with significant leadership responsibility across Sales, Marketing, Business Unit Management, or Commercial Operations.
- Proven experience leading both Sales and Marketing teams or managing integrated commercial execution in a complex, fast-paced organization.
- Strong experience in pharmaceutical, healthcare, FMCG, consumer products, or other customer- and market-driven industries; pharmaceutical experience is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated track record of delivering revenue growth, profitability, market expansion, portfolio growth, and strong commercial execution.
- Strong understanding of sales management, brand and portfolio management, customer engagement, CRM, commercial analytics, forecasting, and performance management.
- Experience leading business transformation, process improvement, productivity initiatives, organizational change, and cross-functional programs.
- Working knowledge of pharmaceutical promotional, regulatory, quality, and compliance requirements is highly desirable.
- Strong strategic thinking, commercial acumen, financial understanding, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent leadership, communication, stakeholder management, negotiation, and influencing capabilities.
- Ability to operate effectively at executive level while maintaining strong execution discipline across commercial teams.

- Marketing Investment Effectiveness: Return on key commercial investments and adherence to approved budgets.
- Planning & Forecast Discipline: Forecast accuracy, integrated Sales-Marketing planning, and effective resource alignment.
- Performance Management: Quality of business reviews, speed of corrective action, and sustained improvement in performance gaps.
- Cross-Functional Execution: Effectiveness of collaboration with enabling and support functions.
- Leadership & Organizational Capability: Strength of leadership pipeline, succession readiness, talent development, employee engagement, and commercial organizational capability.
