Responsibilities

The Chain Puller safely and efficiently pulls lumber from a moving chain and sorts and stacks material into designated units according to species, grade, length, and width. Maintains an organized work area and supports consistent production flow while following established safety and quality procedures.

  • →Pulls lumber from a moving chain and aligns material to ensure ends are straight and lumber is stacked properly.
  • →Sorts and places lumber into designated units according to species, grade, length, and width.
  • →Moves or pushes full lumber carts to designated locations as required.
  • →Operates a small chop saw to perform end trimming in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • →Assists with equipment and production changeovers as needed.
  • →Performs barcoding duties on a rotational basis.
  • →Performs general housekeeping and cleanup activities during production downtime.
  • →Maintains the work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • →Follows established safety procedures and promptly reports unsafe conditions, equipment issues, or other concerns.
  • →Works cooperatively with team members to maintain safe and efficient production flow.
  • →Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Six months of related manufacturing, lumber, or production experience preferred.
  • Ability to learn and accurately identify lumber by species, grade, length, width, and other applicable characteristics.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a forklift operator’s license through company-provided training.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow work-related documents, including safety rules, operating instructions, procedures, and equipment-related instructions.

  • Regularly stand and/or walk for extended periods while performing essential job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequently reach, grasp, handle, pull, and position lumber from a moving chain.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand, wrist, arm, and upper-body movements associated with handling, sorting, aligning, and stacking lumber.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, reach, and otherwise position the body as necessary to safely handle materials and perform assigned tasks.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials and equipment up from 25-100 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Ability to visually inspect and distinguish lumber characteristics necessary for sorting and placement by species, grade, length, and width.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include: Close vision (e.g., inspecting machine components); Distance vision (e.g., monitoring operations); Color vision (e.g., identifying wire colors and indicator lights).

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration from machinery such as saws, conveyors, and hydraulic systems.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to airborne particles, including sawdust, lubricants, fumes, and welding smoke.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, as well as high, precarious places including catwalks, scaffolding, and elevated work areas.
  • The employee is also exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, when working in or around outdoor areas of the facility.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, requiring the consistent use of hearing protection in designated areas.
  • The employee is required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated b company policy and OSHA Standards, which may include: Safety glasses or face shields, hearing protection, safety gloves, steel-toe safety footwear, hard hats, and respiratory protection if necessary.
