The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Responsibilities
~2 min readThe Grader 4 ensures that lumber is graded accurately and conforms to the American Lumber Standards Committee rules, which establishes uniform lumber sizes, grade names, and grading provisions.

- →Inspects lumber on tables, moving belts, chain conveyors, or racks to identify defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, and milling defects.
- →Grades lumber in accordance with established grading standards, specifications, and required dimensions.
- →Marks lumber to indicate grade and applicable processing or cutting instructions.
- →Tallies lumber by grade, size, and board footage and accurately records results.
- →Evaluates lumber and determines appropriate cuts to maximize the marketable value and recovery of material.
- →Identifies and removes lumber that does not meet established grade or quality requirements and places material in designated stacks, bins, carts, or other locations.
- →Measures and calculates board footage as required and maintains accurate production and grading records.
- →Pulls and organizes graded lumber into units according to established specifications.
- →Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work area.
- →Communicate with team members regarding lumber quality, grading requirements, and production needs.
- →Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
~1 min read- High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
- At least six months’ experience as a grader trainee and/or has achieved a series of 95% on grade inspection reports and passed the required grader written quiz.
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow work-related documents, including safety rules, operating instructions, procedures, and equipment-related instructions.
- Ability to apply practical judgment and common-sense understanding to routine work situations.

- Regularly required to stand for extended periods and walk short distances to inspect lumber.
- Frequently uses hands and fingers to control the flow of lumber through equipment, including operating buttons and control switches.
- Occasionally required to kneel, stoop, and bend to perform tasks such as feeding materials into racks or addressing equipment issues.
- Occasionally use hand tools such as staplers, barcode scanners, and rubber mallets.
- May operator a handheld tool (up to 10 pounds) using repetitive or controlled motion.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with or without assistance.
- Required to climb stair, catwalks, or step over equipment components to access work areas or perform repairs.
- Ability to visually inspect lumber and distinguish characteristics necessary to accurately identify defects, dimensions, grades, and other quality requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to perform repetitive physical activities associated with inspecting, grading, marking, handling, and sorting lumber throughout the work shift.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration from machinery such as saws, conveyors, and hydraulic systems.
- The employee is frequently exposed to airborne particles, including sawdust, wood chips, bark, lubricants, fumes, and the risk of electrical shock.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, as well as high, precarious places including catwalks, scaffolding, and elevated work areas.
- The employee is also exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, when working in or around outdoor areas of the facility.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, requiring the consistent use of hearing protection in designated areas.
- The employee is required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated by company policy and OSHA Standards, which may include Safety glasses or face shields.
