Main Purpose of Job :
- Lead the World of Ports (WOP) marine data and operational delivery function, acting as the senior maritime subject-matter expert between global Inchcape teams, product, technology and customers.
- Own delivery against KPIs for collection, verification, validation and publication of port, terminal, berth, vessel and marine-operational datasets and APIs, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and operational relevance.
- Translate practical seagoing and port-operational expertise into product requirements, customer use cases and continuous improvements that support safe, efficient and commercially sound maritime decision-making.
Key Accountabilities :
- Lead, coach and develop the WOP marine/data operations team, setting clear standards for performance, quality and professional growth.
- Act as the senior marine subject-matter expert for port, terminal, berth, vessel and cargo operations across WOP products and services.
- Own marine-data governance, validation standards and quality controls to ensure data is operationally credible, consistent and fit for customer use.
- Engage directly with shipowners, operators, charterers, terminals, ports and other customers to understand operational needs and convert feedback into actionable requirements.
- Build strong working relationships across the Inchcape global network to improve source coverage, verification discipline and timeliness of marine information.
- Partner with Product, Technology and Data teams to define specifications, acceptance criteria and priorities for maritime data and digital solutions.
- Provide marine-operational oversight for new datasets, APIs and product features, ensuring outputs reflect real-world shipping and port workflows.
- Use data and domain insight to identify gaps, trends and opportunities, providing clear recommendations that support the WOP product roadmap.
- Manage multiple workstreams and improvement initiatives, balancing operational delivery, customer priorities, risk and strategic objectives.
- Establish and maintain SOPs, controls, documentation and audit trails that strengthen operational resilience and data quality.
- Represent WOP in customer and stakeholder forums, communicate progress to senior management, and support sprint/release readiness from a marine-business perspective.
Key Deliverables
- Demonstrable senior-level maritime experience with strong practical knowledge of vessel operations, ports, terminals, berths, cargo operations and port agency workflows.
- Strong marine assurance and operational risk mindset, with the ability to assess the reliability and operational relevance of maritime information.
- Consistently high data quality, verification and service performance against agreed KPIs and customer expectations.
- Successful conversion of marine-domain knowledge and customer feedback into clear product requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Effective leadership of a geographically dispersed team, with measurable improvements in capability, accountability, quality and productivity.
- Trusted engagement with senior internal stakeholders and external maritime customers, supported by clear, credible and concise communication.
- Successful delivery of marine-data, API and digital initiatives in partnership with Product, Technology and Data teams.
- Well-governed processes, SOPs and controls that support traceability, continuous improvement and operational resilience.
- Proactive identification of data gaps, customer pain points and maritime-market opportunities that inform the WOP roadmap and priorities.
Skills and Experience required :
- Marine Operations Expertise: In-depth knowledge of vessel operations, ports, terminals, berths, cargo handling, port agency processes and ship/shore interfaces.
- Seagoing / Marine Background: Senior officer-level seagoing or equivalent shore-based marine operations experience, with strong practical understanding of shipboard and port operations.
- Marine Assurance & Risk: Sound knowledge of marine assurance, operational risk, HSSE principles and safe operating practices relevant to vessels and terminals.
- Data Governance: Ability to define verification rules, quality controls and governance standards for critical maritime operational data.
- Customer & Stakeholder Engagement: Credible communication with shipowners, operators, charterers, ports, terminals, agents and senior internal stakeholders.
- Product & Business Translation: Ability to convert marine workflows, operational pain points and customer needs into product requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Digital Maritime Transformation: Strong understanding of maritime digitalisation, data platforms, APIs, vessel/port intelligence and technology-enabled operational decision support.
- Team Leadership: Proven ability to lead, coach and develop multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams while setting clear performance standards.
- Project & Delivery Management: Ability to manage concurrent workstreams, priorities, risks, dependencies and delivery milestones in a fast-paced environment.
- Commercial Awareness: Understanding of how reliable port and vessel intelligence supports voyage planning, chartering, operations, demurrage, risk and customer value.
- Analytical Capability: Ability to interpret complex maritime datasets, identify anomalies and trends, and communicate practical insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Change & Continuous Improvement: Ability to improve processes, introduce new standards and guide teams through operational and technology change.
- Communication & Reporting: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including senior-management reporting and customer-facing presentations.
- Problem Solving & Judgement: Sound operational judgement with a structured approach to resolving data, process, customer and delivery issues.
Experience :
- Maritime Experience: Typically 10+ years in shipping, marine operations, ports, terminals, vessel operations or closely related maritime roles.
- Senior Marine Responsibility: Experience at senior officer level at sea (preferably Master Mariner / Chief Engineer / Chief Officer / Second Engineer) or equivalent senior shore-based marine responsibility.
- Port & Terminal Operations: Hands-on exposure to port calls, berth/terminal operations, cargo operations, marine services and ship/shore coordination.
- Marine Assurance: Experience applying marine assurance, HSSE, operational risk or compliance principles in vessel, port or terminal environments.
- Leadership & People Management: Proven experience leading teams, setting standards, managing performance and developing capability.
- Maritime Data / Digital Solutions: Experience using or delivering maritime data, port intelligence, vessel-tracking, API, analytics or other digital shipping solutions.
- Customer Relations: Experience engaging maritime customers and stakeholders, gathering requirements and resolving operational or service issues.
- Product / Project Delivery: Experience contributing to or leading product, data or technology initiatives from requirement definition through implementation.
- Data Quality & Governance: Experience establishing validation processes, quality controls, SOPs and traceable governance for operational information.
- Cross-functional Working: Demonstrated ability to work effectively across marine operations, commercial, product, technology and data teams.
- Global / Distributed Operations: Experience working across different geographies, cultures and time zones in a global maritime environment.
- Change Management: Track record of implementing process or technology change while maintaining operational delivery.
- Executive Communication: Experience providing concise progress, risk and recommendation updates to senior management and external stakeholders.
- Continuous Improvement: Demonstrated record of improving operational quality, efficiency, customer outcomes or data reliability
Education and Professional Qualification :
Essential: Recognised marine qualification and substantial maritime operating experience.
Preferred: Master Mariner (STCW II/2), Chief Engineer (STCW III/2), or equivalent senior deck/engine certification. Alternatively, a degree in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Maritime Studies or Marine Operations supported by significant vessel, port or terminal experience. A relevant management, project-management or digital/data qualification is advantageous.
