The Union Carpenter is responsible for providing skilled carpentry services in an active healthcare environment. This position performs maintenance, repair, installation, and construction activities throughout the hospital while ensuring compliance with infection control, life safety, and regulatory requirements. Primary responsibilities include repairing and maintaining doors and door hardware, constructing infection control containments up to and including Level II containment requirements, and performing general carpentry work to support hospital operations.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- Repair, adjust, maintain, and install hospital doors and frames.
- Replace and repair door hardware, including hinges, locks, closers, panic devices, handles, and thresholds.
- Troubleshoot door alignment, latching, security, and accessibility issues.
- Maintain fire-rated door assemblies in accordance with life safety requirements.
- Conduct preventative maintenance inspections of doors and hardware.
- Construct, modify, maintain, and remove Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) containments up to and including Level II containments.
- Install temporary walls, dust barriers, zip walls, and protective enclosures to isolate construction and maintenance activities.
- Assist with the installation and monitoring of negative air systems when required.
- Ensure containment areas remain secure and effective throughout project duration.
- Coordinate with hospital Infection Prevention and Facilities personnel to maintain compliance with healthcare construction standards.
- Perform rough and finish carpentry work throughout the hospital campus.
- Install and repair drywall, framing, ceilings, wall protection, millwork, casework, and related building components.
- Perform patching and finishing work following maintenance and renovation activities.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, and work orders.
- Measure, cut, fabricate, and install materials to required specifications.
- Follow all hospital safety policies, infection control procedures, and OSHA regulations.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas, especially in occupied patient care environments.
- Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Participate in emergency response activities and after-hours maintenance as required.
- Support compliance with Joint Commission standards, CMS requirements, and Life Safety Code regulations.
Requirements
~1 min read- Journeyman Carpenter status through a recognized union apprenticeship program.
- Minimum three (3) years of commercial, institutional, or healthcare carpentry experience.
- Experience in door and hardware repair and installation.
- Knowledge of healthcare infection control practices and containment construction.
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
- Valid driver's license, if required.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and work from lifts for extended periods.
- Ability to work in patient care areas while maintaining professionalism and minimizing disruption.
- Ability to wear required PPE and work within containment environments.
- Active hospital environment operating 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
- Exposure to construction, maintenance, and renovation activities in occupied healthcare spaces.
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins.
This position is covered by the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement with Local 399 and requires compliance with all union and hospital policies and work rules.
This position does not provide visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
