This role will lead the launch and growth of a dedicated online community supporting people living with sickle cell disease (SCD).
You will create a trusted, inclusive environment where members can connect, share experiences, and access credible health information.
The role combines community strategy, hands-on engagement, thoughtful moderation, and patient advocacy.
You’ll help shape conversations around complex topics including healthcare access, stigma, fatigue, disability benefits, and treatment journeys.
Working closely with Product, Content, Analytics, Marketing, and Research teams, you’ll turn member insights into meaningful improvements.
You’ll also contribute to the health and growth of other online communities while experimenting with new engagement approaches.

Launch and serve as the primary community manager for a new sickle cell disease community, establishing a trusted, credible, culturally responsive presence from the beginning.

Shape community norms, discussion topics, member experiences, and engagement strategies around the realities of living with SCD.

Welcome new members and foster an environment where people feel safe, understood, and encouraged to participate.

Develop engaging prompts, polls, Q&As, educational discussions, and storytelling opportunities that encourage authentic peer connection and practical support.

Support community ambassadors and highly engaged members who help strengthen trust, belonging, and participation.

Moderate conversations thoughtfully, maintaining a safe, respectful, inclusive, and evidence-informed environment.

Address misinformation and unproven treatments with nuance, education, and sound judgment while respecting lived experience and peer-to-peer connection.

Help members identify credible, evidence-informed resources related to their health journeys and practical needs.

Surface member insights, recurring challenges, and emerging themes to Product, Editorial, Marketing, Research, and other internal teams.

Advocate for members by helping internal stakeholders understand the emotional, social, and practical challenges associated with SCD beyond clinical symptoms.

Contribute ideas that improve the connection between community, email, product, and content experiences.

Manage a broader portfolio of health communities alongside the primary SCD focus.

Analyze engagement patterns and community trends to identify opportunities for improvement and strengthen member connection.

Test new engagement strategies while maintaining a strong focus on member needs, trust, safety, and community health.
Requirements

3+ years of experience building and managing online communities, patient communities, peer-support environments, or highly relationship-driven digital experiences.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create supportive, thoughtful, and member-centered interactions.

High emotional intelligence, empathy, and sound judgment when navigating sensitive or vulnerable conversations.

Demonstrated ability to build trust with diverse communities and encourage inclusive participation.

Comfort discussing sensitive subjects involving healthcare access, treatment experiences, stigma, misinformation, and social determinants of health.

Ability to collaborate effectively with Product, Content, Analytics, Marketing, Community, and other cross-functional teams.

Strong ability to balance compassion and authenticity with thoughtful moderation, evidence-based standards, and community safety.

A genuine understanding of the lived experience and community dynamics surrounding sickle cell disease is highly valued.

Experience in patient advocacy, public health, social work, behavioral health, caregiving, or online peer support is a plus.

A professional, advocacy-based, caregiving, or lived connection to the SCD community is especially valuable.

Cultural fluency and a nuanced understanding of healthcare access, trust, stigma, and health-equity dynamics affecting the African American community are preferred.

Experience combining community insights with data-informed decision-making is an advantage.
