You will lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes while overseeing financial statements, management reporting, and financial controls.
The role combines strategic financial leadership with hands-on accounting oversight, budgeting support, audit coordination, and process improvement.
You will serve as a trusted partner to executive leadership and Board committees, translating complex financial information into clear and actionable insights.
The position also manages accounting staff, establishes performance expectations, and strengthens operational controls and finance processes.
A strong focus on GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, compliance, and continuous improvement will be essential to the role’s success.
This is a fully remote opportunity for an experienced accounting leader who can balance strategic thinking, technical expertise, and practical execution in a mission-driven environment.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring accurate, timely, and well-controlled reporting.
- Review and approve financial statements, management reports, and other financial information used by leadership and Board stakeholders.
- Prepare clear, executive-level financial presentations and Board reporting packages that support informed decision-making.
- Ensure financial reporting practices comply with GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting standards while monitoring opportunities to improve reporting quality and close efficiency.
- Supervise accounting staff, including AP & Payroll and AR & Treasury functions, while establishing performance expectations and providing coaching and professional development.
- Maintain effective segregation of duties and strengthen internal controls, policies, procedures, and supporting documentation.
- Act as the primary liaison with external auditors and coordinate annual audit activities, Form 990 preparation, and related compliance requirements.
- Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes by analyzing financial trends, variances, and key performance indicators.
- Provide decision-support analysis to executive leadership and Board committees, helping translate financial data into actionable business insights.
- Identify opportunities for automation, process efficiency, and finance system improvements, including enhancements to reporting capabilities.
- Promote data-driven financial decision-making and continuously improve finance operations and reporting processes.
- Respond effectively to changing regulatory requirements and shifting organizational priorities while maintaining strong financial governance.
Requirements
~1 min read- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA certification is required, or candidates should be actively pursuing CPA certification.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in accounting and financial reporting, with at least 3 years of leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, accounting close processes, GAAP, internal controls, audits, budgeting, and financial analysis.
- Experience in nonprofit accounting, audits, grants, and fund accounting is preferred.
- Experience managing or overseeing AP and AR functions and improving broader financial operations.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP systems; Sage Intacct or a similar platform is preferred.
- Experience with grant cycle management is a plus.
- Strong executive communication skills and demonstrated ability to present financial information to senior leadership and Board-level audiences.
- Ability to operate strategically while remaining hands-on and closely engaged with day-to-day financial operations.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to adapt to frequently changing priorities and evolving regulatory requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop finance professionals while maintaining high standards of accountability and performance.
