AWS Technical Lead

Koniag IT Systems, LLC a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking an AWS Technical Lead to support KITS and our government customer in Washington, DC. The position is hybrid, requires 1-2 days onsite.    Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off, paid parental leave, life and disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, commuter benefits and tuition reimbursement.  Koniag IT Systems, LLC is seeking a is seeking a seasoned AWS Technical Lead with a minimum of 10 years of IT infrastructure experience, including 5+ years focused on AWS architecture and engineering, to serve as the senior technical authority for cloud architecture, design standards, and migration strategy on a federal civilian program. This is an individual-contributor technical leadership role (no direct reports) that partners closely with the Infrastructure & Platform Operations Lead and functional engineering teams to help set the technical direction for the program's AWS environment. The ideal candidate has led enterprise-scale AWS migrations, holds current AWS architecture certification, and can translate agency modernization priorities into a well-architected, secure, and cost-efficient cloud environment. This position is Hybrid – on-site as required to support client meetings (~1-2 days/week).The AWS Technical Lead will be responsible for the target-state AWS architecture for the program, including computer, networking, storage, and security design across GovCloud and commercial AWS regions as applicable.  Key responsibilities include but are not limited to: Provide senior technical leadership for ongoing data center exit and cloud migration efforts, defining migration patterns, sequencing, and technical risk mitigation for legacy on-premises workloads. Lead AWS Well-Architected Framework reviews across the program's workloads, driving remediation of reliability, security, performance, and cost findings. Set and enforce infrastructure-as-code standards (Terraform, CloudFormation) and reusable landing zone/account architecture patterns in partnership with the Automation Engineer and Server/Cloud Engineering teams. Own FinOps practices for the program's AWS footprint, including cost visibility, tagging standards, rightsizing, and reserved capacity/savings plan recommendations. Partner with security engineering to design and validate Zero Trust-aligned network and identity architecture (IAM, security groups, PrivateLink, microsegmentation) in accordance with NIST SP 800-53 and FedRAMP requirements. Provide technical leadership for the program's business disaster continuity and recovery (BDCR) architecture, including multi-AZ/multi-region resilience design for mission-critical financial systems. Evaluate and pilot emerging AWS services and container/orchestration platforms (ECS, EKS) to inform the program's modernization roadmap. Mentor server/cloud engineers and review technical designs, runbooks, and architecture diagrams produced across the infrastructure team. Serve as the technical escalation point for complex AWS production issues and represent the program in customer architecture review boards (ARB) and technical exchange meetings   Education and Experience:Required: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field from an accredited college or university Minimum of 10 years of IT infrastructure experience, including 5+ years focused on AWS architecture and engineering at enterprise scale. Demonstrated experience leading enterprise cloud migrations, including data center exit or legacy modernization initiatives. Deep, hands-on expertise across core AWS services (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, RDS, CloudFormation/Terraform) with AWS GovCloud experience strongly preferred. Strong understanding of AWS Well-Architected Framework principles and experience leading formal architecture reviews. Working knowledge of FinOps practices and cloud cost optimization techniques. Experience designing security architecture aligned to Zero Trust principles and federal frameworks (NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP).   Required Skills and Competencies: Strong knowledge of AWS services and hands-on experience with AWS cloud infrastructure Experience with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation Proficiency in scripting languages like Python, Bash, or PowerShell Understanding of security best practices and common security threats Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders   Security Requirement: Ability to obtain public trust clearance   Desired Skills and Competencies: Experience working in a federal government IT environment Knowledge of compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, FISMA, or NIST AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (required or strongly preferred at time of hire). Additional AWS specialty certification (Security, Networking, or DevOps Engineer – Professional). Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, ECS, EKS/Kubernetes). Experience supporting business disaster continuity and recovery (BDCR) architecture for federal financial or mission-critical systems.
