The Managing Vice President, Global Risk Management leads Marriott International’s global risk management strategy and operations, with responsibility for Insurance, Claims and Occupational Health Services, Fire & Life Safety, and Operational Resilience.  The role has oversight and accountability for minimizing risk and reducing financial loss through the effective management and execution of these disciplines as it relates to associate injuries, guest liabilities, property losses, business interruptions, and other insurable exposures worldwide. 

This position sets the strategic direction for the Risk Management organization and serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on enterprise risk, insurance program design, captive insurance operations, and risk financing strategies.  Working closely with corporate and continent leaders, the Managing Vice President drives organizational effectiveness, fosters cross-functional partnerships, and ensures compliance with its legal, regulatory and contractual obligations while supporting Marriott’s long-term business objectives, brand integrity, and growth strategy. 

Required 

  • 15+ years’ experience as a Risk Management leader, including a minimum of 10+ years of demonstrated success as a senior Risk Management professional. 
  • Baccalaureate degree in Finance or related discipline. 
  • Experience leading global insurance strategy across multiple lines of coverage, including engagement with global markets and brokers across multiple insurance lines.  
  • Proven ability to structure, negotiate and place traditional insurance and alternative risk transfer solutions and other risk financing arrangements, while maintaining strong market relationships.  
  • Experience with the structure and operation of captive insurance companies, including governance, capitalization, regulatory requirements, and alignment with broader risk financing strategy. 
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills; ability to take large volumes of complex information and present it in a clear and concise manner to senior management, owners and franchisees; uses data and a cogent problem- solving methodology in decision making and impact assessment.  
  • Skillful negotiator in tough situations; sells ideas persuasively; settles differences and wins concessions without damaging relationships; can be both direct and forceful while remaining diplomatic. 
  • Strong leader of people – ability to create compelling vision, demonstrate flexibility in approach, and motivates others (who may, oftentimes, not be direct reports) to achieve desired results; ability to work in a matrix organization and make things happen without having to own all of the resources; leverages shared resources to achieve results. 

Preferred 

  • MBA or Master of Science/Graduate Degree in Risk Management  
  • Senior leadership experience with a global hospitality company 
  • ARM and CPCU designation 

 

 

  • Sets the strategic direction for Marriott’s Risk Management organization.  Ensures that the teams leverage and analyze data from market research, vendor relations and business performance to develop cost savings strategies to Marriott International in the procure of services from third party providers. 
  • Drives strategic, proactive risk management efforts to ensure the appropriate focus and resources are applied to maximize value and reduce exposure for the Company’s existing and future assets worldwide. 
  • Leads the strategic utilization of the company’s captive insurance company, ensuring its long-term financial health and alignment with enterprise risk management objectives.   
  • Provides transformational leadership as a change champion, aligning the Risk Management organizational structure with the company’s strategic direction while leading and integrating four core areas: Insurance, Claims, Fire Life Safety (FLS), and Operational Resilience. 
  • Serves as an advisor to senior leadership on acceptable risk levels, risk transfer, financial structure of insurance plans and cost allocations. 
  • In partnership with Continent Presidents and other senior executives, establishes processes and controls to proactively identify brand integrity risks and creatively resolves them.   
  • Collaborates with Legal, Human Resources, Global Design, Development, Internal Audit and other key stakeholders on cross functional, large scale projects/initiatives.  Serves as a thought leader related to expert knowledge of business risk. 
  • Oversees global insurance programs, including policy placement, broker management, premium negotiations, and alternative risk transfer strategies, delivering significant cost savings for the Company. 
  • Provide strategic oversight of claims operations, including high-exposure and reputational risk cases.  
  • Partners closely with the Global Safety & Security (GS&S) organization to ensure Risk Management considerations—including Insurance, Claims, Fire & Life Safety, and Operational Resilience—are reflected in organizational priorities and that key data, insights, and information are shared across all Risk Management disciplines. 
  • Ensures competitiveness of risk management programs and services through appropriate measurements and benchmarking. Responsible for all aspects of performance, including planning, developing, and measuring the performance of the discipline and evaluating its quality and making changes where appropriate 
  • Represents Risk Management in a wide range of internal and external forums and selected insurer advisory boards to ensure Marriott International keeps pace with industry changes. 
  • Fosters excellence in business ethics and integrity, social responsibility, cross-cultural effectiveness, and associate engagement.   
  • Provides strategic counsel on decisions involving significant enterprise risk, leveraging data, industry trends and lessons learned to influence decisions that support long-term enterprise objectives.   
  • Participates in key talent management activities such as interviewing and hiring, performance management, human capital reviews; ensures talent development occurs throughout the entire department. 
  • Identifies talents of direct reports and their teams and assists with their growth and development to ensure a steady talent pipeline for key positions. 
  • Champions excellence in business ethics and integrity, social responsibility, cross-cultural effectiveness, and associate engagement.
