McKim & Creed is seeking an experienced to lead underground utility locating operations throughout our assigned North Coastal Florida territory. Our primary recruiting focus is Ocala and Marion County, where we have the greatest need for a locally based supervisor.
The assigned territory includes Alachua, Bay, Citrus, Columbia, Dixie, Franklin, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Levy, Madison, Marion, Pasco, Sumter, Suwannee, Taylor, and Wakulla counties. Work within these counties is limited to the assigned client service areas.
The 811 Field Supervisor oversees daily work assignments, safe field operations, locating quality, timely ticket completion, employee development, and accurate documentation. You will work closely with the 811 Operations Manager, Project Coordinators, and client representatives to maintain dependable service and resolve operational issues.
Success means protecting people and underground utilities, developing capable technicians, and meeting company and client requirements.
- Lead daily field operations. Assign and adjust work based on ticket due dates, workload, travel distances, technician qualifications, and available resources.
- Put safety first. Reinforce safe work practices, verify required daily safety documentation, address hazards, and ensure technicians have the training and equipment needed to work safely.
- Verify locating quality. Conduct field observations and review completed tickets, utility markings, positive responses, and required post-locate photographs.
- Train and develop technicians. Provide onboarding, hands-on instruction, coaching, and competency assessments. Document progress and verify improvement after corrective training.
- Monitor service performance. Track ticket completion, backlog, overdue assignments, productivity, overtime, and documentation quality. Address issues while maintaining safe, accurate locating practices.
- Resolve and escalate field problems. Coordinate assistance for unlocatable facilities, conflicting records, access restrictions, equipment failures, and other conditions affecting ticket completion.
- Maintain client communication. Provide clear updates, coordinate field support, and promptly communicate service issues through established channels.
- Support damage and near-miss investigations. Respond as assigned, preserve ticket records and photographs, document facts, and support corrective actions.
- Maintain equipment readiness. Monitor the condition and availability of trucks, locating instruments, tablets, phones, PPE, and other field supplies.
- Support staffing and retention. Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, mentoring, and performance management in coordination with operations leadership and Human Resources.
- Coordinate coverage. Plan for employee absences, workload changes, and scheduled emergency or after-hours assignments.
- Support accurate reporting. Verify employee time, ticket completion records, and supporting documentation needed for operational reporting and billing reconciliation.
- At least five years of underground utility locating experience, including two years leading or supervising field personnel.
- Strong working knowledge of locating methods, utility-map interpretation, locate-ticket instructions, and positive-response procedures.
- Ability to operate locating receivers and transmitters and troubleshoot difficult locating conditions.
- Experience assigning work, managing multiple technicians, and maintaining service across an assigned territory.
- Ability to recognize unsafe practices and locating-quality issues, provide corrective coaching, and verify results.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to document field conditions, employee performance, and operational issues.
- Proficiency with ticket-management software, mobile devices, email, and basic spreadsheets.
- Sound judgment, organization, accountability, and the ability to adjust priorities as conditions change.
- Ability to travel up to 25% throughout the assigned North Coastal territory to support technicians, conduct field reviews, provide training, and coordinate operations.
- Availability to support scheduled emergency and after-hours coverage as required by the assignment.
- A valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record, with successful completion of required background screening and drug testing.
- Experience locating underground electric power and telecommunications facilities.
- Experience with UtiliSphere or comparable 811 ticket-management systems.
- A demonstrated record of developing technicians and improving safety, locating quality, and documentation.
- Experience conducting field audits, reviewing locate photographs, and supporting damage investigations.
- Familiarity with the roads, communities, and utility locating conditions throughout the assigned territory.
- Ability to build a dependable team, maintain client confidence, and resolve problems promptly.
