About the Team

Nium’s Global Legal Team works at the intersection of financial technology and regulatory frameworks. Our work helps Nium build innovative products, understand and manage risks, and creatively navigate complexity and challenges.

About the Role

We’re looking for a fast-learning and dynamic Senior Product & Regulatory Counsel, based in our San Francisco office, to support our rapid growth throughout North and South America. You’ll be a key strategic advisor to cross-functional teams, including Product, Engineering, Compliance, Bank Partnerships, and Marketing. You’ll help design and build new payment products and services, provide strategic advice about Nium’s legal and regulatory obligations in the Americas region, and help drive our expansion into new markets.
This role requires strong familiarity with US money transmission licensing (MTLs), cross-border payment systems and regulations, US bank sponsorship, and financial services laws to help us continue to drive innovation and accelerate our licensing and growth plans for the region. Familiarity with––or an ability to quickly learn––the regulatory schemes across Canada, Brazil, Mexico, is also required.
  • As a key member of our Global Product & Regulatory Legal Team, you’ll be lead counsel for driving our legal and regulatory strategy across North and South America (in particular, US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, among others).
  • You’ll lead our efforts to obtain, operationalize, and maintain our core licenses through the region (including US MTLs, Brazilian EMI and FX licenses, Mexican money transmitter license, Canadian RPAA compliance, Quebec MSB license, among others).
  • You’ll partner closely with our global product, engineering and business teams to advise on a range of issues including product development, financial services regulations, payments, consumer protection, market expansion, data privacy and intellectual property.
  • You’ll live and breathe the Legal Team's core values of operating with Speed, Clarity and Trust.
  • You’ll help build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products and services.
  • You have at least 6 years of experience as a qualified lawyer in an in-house legal team, top law firm and/or government agency.
  • You have deep familiarity with payments, fintech, or financial services laws and regulations, throughout the Americas.
  • You’re highly collaborative, are inquisitive and solutions-oriented, and have prior experience advising on product development at fast-moving technology companies.
  • You’re biased towards action and impact, and no task is too big or too small for you; you can roll up your sleeves and get things done.
  • You have exceptional verbal and interpersonal communication skills, can build strong relationships with business colleagues, and can simplify legal concepts and communicate them in easy-to-understand language.
  • You exhibit genuine curiosity, are passionate about your work, and enjoy a fast-paced working environment.
  • You’re humble with low-ego, have a strong desire to grow and learn, and have a deep commitment to your teammates.
