Engineer-Electrical I

Incorporated in 1948, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) provides reliable, cost-effective, environmentally balanced, wholesale electric services to our 11-member distribution cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Our core business is generating, purchasing and delivering electricity to our members. ODEC is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative that operates for the benefit of our members, who are our owners. Our office is located in Glen Allen, Virginia.  

Purpose of Job:  

Provide electrical engineering support for transmission and generation systems, with a primary focus on transmission-related assets and projects. Support engineering, design review, project development, and field activities associated with capital improvement and maintenance projects. Assist senior engineers with other departmental tasks such as member interconnection, transmission planning, communications, and other duties. Work collaboratively with internal departments, consultants, and contractors to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of transmission infrastructure and related assets.  

Essential responsibilities include: 

• Assist other engineers with technical support 
•  Investigate engineering issues, perform basic analysis, and support development of solutions and recommendations. 
•  Assist with electrical equipment testing programs, including data collection, tracking, and basic analysis. 
•  Support trending and evaluation of equipment performance data. 
•  Assist with development and documentation of technical recommendations. 
•  Provide support for internal engineering requests and issue tracking.   
•  Support Engineering, Planning, and Member Activities  
•  Participate in planning discussions for capital improvement and maintenance projects. 
•  Review engineering consultant designs, estimates, and technical documentation. 
•  Assist in development of scopes of work and supporting project documentation. 
•  Participate in bid evaluations and procurement support activities. 
•  Gain familiarity with project lifecycle phases , including conceptual engineering, detailed design, procurement, and construction support 
•  Develop working knowledge of coordination with: Engineering teams, contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders 
•  Support NERC compliance efforts by assisting with documentation, reviews, and audits 
•  Provide Field and Project Support 
•  Assist with field inspections and site visits in transmission and generation environments.    
•  Track field issues and support coordination of issue resolution.   
•  Collect and organize field reports, contractor documentation, and safety records.   
• Assist in verifying construction work against engineering drawings and specifications.   
• Support coordination with contractors and field personnel under supervision.   
•  Assist with review of turnover packages, including drawings, bill of materials, and vendor documentation.
•  Support project documentation and recordkeeping. 
•  Maintain and organize engineering and project documentation. 
•  Support tracking of project data, correspondence, and deliverables. 
•  Assist with maintaining compliance with corporate records and management standards. 
•  Support documentation of technical issues, testing results, and project activities.  

Work Experience:   

•  0 to 6 months of experience in electrical engineering.
•  0 to 6 months of experience in power generation, preferred. 

Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

•  Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•  Ability to work independently or as a contributing member to various teams.
•  Must be willing to quickly learn and follow safety requirements.
•  Basic ability to organize and prioritize own activities, exercise sound time management and work methods.
•  Basic analytical skills and experience with problem-solving techniques.
•  Basic knowledge of design drawings.
•  Demonstrated working knowledge of CAD or other drafting application.
•  Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of Products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, Project.
•  Familiarity with engineering methods. 

Education:   

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE). 

 Travel details: Occasional overnight travel required in this position  

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:   

•  Travel is required in this position. 
•  This position is frequently required to perform fieldwork, which may involve walking over rough terrain, during all types of weather conditions.    
•  The position is frequently required to spend a number of hours outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions, and will typically be in a high-voltage substation or power plant. 
•  The employee should have the capability to walk on uneven surfaces. 
•  The employee must be able to climb ladders, potentially several feet high, and walk on platforms. 
•  This position requires some heavy lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.  

Compensation range: $37.14/hour to $38.14/hour
