Let's Write Africa's Story Together!

Old Mutual is a firm believer in the African opportunity and our diverse talent reflects this.

This newly created role in the Office of the Life & Savings (L&S) Cluster CFO leads actuarial and strategic financial coordination across the Cluster’s reporting, planning, forecasting and governance cycles.

The role is responsible for driving the effective delivery of the L&S CFO agenda. This is a broad, high-exposure role suited to a commercially minded actuary who can coordinate across businesses, influence senior stakeholders and translate complex technical information into clear insights for decision making.

The Business Partner will integrate the L&S financial and actuarial views, ensuring that results, plans and forecasts are complete, consistent and supported by clear executive commentary. The role aligns inputs from BU CFOs, Finance Business Partners, Finance Actuaries and Proposition Heads, as well as Group teams, and ensures appropriateness of assumptions within reporting and planning cycles.

The role managess the L&S Actuarial and Financial Forum (AFF), ensuring that material issues arising from the actuarial control cycle are identified, clearly articulated, escalated and assigned to the appropriate accountable function.

  • Lead actuarial and financial coordination for the L&S CFO across the recurring reporting, planning, forecasting and performance-management cycle.
  • Translate results, plans and forecasts into concise analysis and commentary that informs CFO and ExCo decisions.
  • Act as the coordinating link between Group, the L&S Cluster and the BUs, aligning priorities and inputs to reduce duplication, conflicting requests and rework.

  • Direct the coordination of L&S inputs into monthly, interim and year-end reporting, producing clear and consistent commentary for internal reporting and Group-led external reporting.
  • Integrate the L&S business plan and forecasts, explain the main earnings, value, capital, cash, expense and volume drivers, and challenge the completeness and consistency of assumptions.
  • Escalate material performance issues or assumptions requiring deeper review to the appropriate accountable function.
  • Manage expense and cost savings related reporting.

  • Drive effective AFF and related governance forums through focused agendas, rigorous review, clear escalation, decision records and disciplined action tracking, ensuring effective functioning of the Actuarial Control Cycle across the Cluster.
  • Ensure that material experience, valuation, capital and reporting issues are surfaced through AFF and assigned to the appropriate accountable function.
  • Establish consistent definitions, methods, controls and reporting expectations across L&S, while execution remains with the relevant BU or specialist team.

  • Identify material performance issues through reporting, planning and actuarial governance, and recommend appropriate follow-up.
  • Provide technical actuarial and commercial input on finance initiatives requiring judgment across IFRS 17, EV, capital and business performance.
  • Lead competitor analysis across major South African insurers, translating peer results into actionable insights.
