Railcar Repair Mechanic – Welding & Mechanical

Road & Rail Services is hiring an experienced Railcar Repair Mechanic in Wausau, Wisconsin. We're looking for skilled tradespeople who know how to work with tools, diagnose repair needs, and complete hands-on mechanical or structural repairs safely.

If your background includes welding, fabrication, diesel repair, trailer repair, heavy equipment, industrial maintenance, fleet maintenance, manufacturing maintenance, or mechanical repair, we want to hear from you.

We'll provide training on railcar-specific procedures and requirements. You bring the mechanical experience, tool knowledge, safety awareness, and ability to complete quality repairs.

This is a hands-on repair position-not a production-line or general labor job.

Your responsibilities will include:

Inspect railcars for mechanical defects, damage, wear, and structural concerns

Complete authorized mechanical and structural railcar repairs

Perform welding, cutting, grinding, and metal repair as required

Remove, repair, replace, and install damaged components

Use grinders, impact tools, wrenches, pry bars, cutting equipment, welding equipment, and other hand and power tools

Measure, fit, and fabricate components when necessary

Troubleshoot mechanical problems and determine appropriate repair methods

Inspect completed work for quality and proper fit

Follow established repair procedures and customer requirements

Maintain tools, equipment, and assigned work areas

Follow all company, customer, and railroad safety requirements

Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Report equipment concerns, unsafe conditions, and repair issues to supervision

We're interested in candidates with professional experience in areas such as:

MIG, stick, structural, or repair welding

Metal fabrication

Diesel or fleet maintenance

Semi-trailer or truck repair

Heavy-equipment repair

Industrial maintenance

Manufacturing maintenance

Millwright work

Mechanical troubleshooting

Structural steel repair

Railroad mechanical work

Candidates should be comfortable reading measurements, working with hand and power tools, and completing repairs in an industrial environment.

This is an outdoor skilled-trades position at an active rail operation. Candidates must be prepared to work year-round in Wisconsin weather.

The position requires the ability to:

Work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, dust, and noisy conditions

Bend, squat, kneel, twist, reach, stand, and walk throughout the shift

Frequently operate railcar end doors requiring approximately 90 pounds of pulling force and 68 pounds of pushing force

Occasionally climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 16 feet

Safely operate welding equipment, cutting equipment, grinders, and other repair tools

Perform physical repair work throughout the scheduled shift

Work independently while communicating effectively with supervisors and coworkers
