The Banner seeks an experienced editor to oversee its expansion in wonderfully diverse Prince George's County. This editor will help lead a robust news desk for one of the nation’s most exciting and ambitious nonprofit media organizations, ensuring that this Pulitzer-winning newsroom continues to produce impactful, sustainable and urgent news.

This editor is committed to uncovering corruption while also elevating stories that highlight community progress and success. The editor lives and breathes local news and believes in being an accessible community leader. Just as much as this editor loves a good story, they also delight in finding non-narrative, service-oriented ways to inform a community. Excellent news judgment and editing skills are a must, as is comfort with making data-informed decisions and spearheading innovative approaches to growing audiences.

The Prince George's County Editor will play a central role in helping to cement The Banner as Maryland’s No. 1 news source. This position is designed for a seasoned editor with experience leading a team of ambitious reporters with kindness and directness.

Responsibilities

  • Operationalize the vision for covering news in Prince George's County by emphasizing impactful enterprise reporting, urgent breaking news and must-have service journalism
  • Consistently articulate coverage priorities and how they align with newsroom goals for growing audiences and producing journalism that matters to people in Prince George's County
  • Initiate and organize coverage on critical topics with creativity and precision
  • Ensure that employees are managed with respect and kindness, and play a key role in helping to develop career pathways for successful employees
  • Greenlight, oversee and edit coverage from a team of reporters covering all aspects of life in Prince George's County
  • A minimum of three years of experience managing and inspiring daily news reporters
  • Impeccable journalistic integrity, editorial judgement and text-editing skills
  • Demonstrated track record of overseeing and editing impactful stories
  • Experience with public speaking and leading community discussions
  • Modern understanding of digital journalism, including applicable metrics, off-platform strategies and audience-engagement techniques
  • Ability to manage several stories concurrently and communicate across multiple divisions while keeping senior management informed of any potential issues
  • Crystal clear communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently meet tight deadlines
  • Commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people management and news coverage
  • Willingness to live in the Prince George's County region
