  • Break significant sports news, from Orioles headlines to high-profile local sports events.
  • Serve as the backup Orioles reporter, traveling to ~35% of away games and attending ~60% of home games (adjusted based on breaking news and story potential).
  • Produce compelling features, profiles, and enterprise pieces that reveal the “why” behind the action.
  • Monitor the local sports scene, uncovering stories our readers didn’t know they wanted. Stay current on news surrounding local stars like Angel Reese and Gervonta Davis to produce unique coverage.
  • Collaborate with The Banner’s engagement and data teams to maximize audience reach and impact across platforms.
  • Partner with editors and reporters across coverage areas where sports intersect business, culture, and community.
  • Engage audiences via video, podcasts, and social media to build a vibrant, interactive connection with readers.
  • 2 or more years of professional journalism experience, ideally covering sports.
  • Be a storyteller at heart, able to make complex topics compelling and accessible.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining meticulous accuracy and fact-checking.
  • A strong news judgment and a keen sense of what readers want.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and energized by working with teams across the newsroom.
  • Comfortable working nights and weekends as stories unfold.
  • Strategic and organized, with excellent planning and time-management skills.
  • Understand how to use data, social media, and SEO to grow digital audiences.
  • Data reporting skills or Spanish language ability are a plus.
  • A commitment to journalistic integrity, ethics, and audience trust.
