Role Purpose

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Officer will play a key role in supporting and promoting a positive health, safety and environmental culture across Splitstone and The Lunch Bag. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting compliance with relevant legislation, maintaining management systems, conducting audits and risk assessments, and driving continuous improvement initiatives to ensure a safe and sustainable working environment.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety

  • Support the implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of the ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

  • Conduct Health & Safety risk assessments and ensure appropriate control measures are implemented and reviewed.

  • Maintain and review Safety Statements and associated risk assessments for both Production and School Meal Services.

  • Monitor compliance with Health & Safety legislation and Health and Safety Authority (HSA) requirements.

  • Act as a key point of contact for Health & Safety matters across the business.

  • Monitor, analyse and report on Health & Safety KPIs and performance metrics.

  • Ensure all accidents, incidents and near misses are reported, investigated and documented, with corrective actions implemented and tracked to completion.

  • Develop, review and implement Health & Safety policies, procedures, work instructions and checklists.

  • Identify Health & Safety training requirements and deliver training, coaching and guidance as required.

  • Ensure all Health & Safety training records and documentation are maintained.

  • Promote employee engagement and consultation in Health & Safety activities, including participation in meetings, audits and risk assessments.

  • Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including evacuation procedures, emergency response planning and fire drills.

Auditing & Compliance

  • Conduct internal audits in accordance with the audit schedule.

  • Document audit findings and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented and monitored.

  • Support external audits, inspections and compliance reviews.

  • Maintain audit readiness across all operational areas.

  • Monitor compliance with company policies, procedures and management systems.

Environmental Management

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

  • Maintain environmental procedures, records and supporting documentation.

  • Monitor and report on environmental KPIs and sustainability targets.

  • Support environmental compliance initiatives and continuous improvement projects.

  • Deliver environmental awareness training and guidance to employees.

Contractor & Facilities Management

  • Implement and maintain a Contractor Management System to ensure compliance with Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.

  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure safe working practices are followed.

  • Act as the primary contact for Facilities Management providers and oversee facilities-related compliance activities.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant third-level qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety or a related discipline.

Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Previous experience in a Health & Safety or EHS role within a manufacturing, production or food production environment.

  • Experience conducting risk assessments and implementing appropriate control measures.

  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety legislation and best practice.

  • Excellent organisational, planning and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively at all levels of the organisation.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

  • Proactive, self-motivated and results-driven approach.

Desirable

  • Experience working within ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 management systems.

  • Internal Auditor qualification.

  • Train the Trainer, Manual Handling Instructor or other relevant training qualifications.

  • Experience delivering Health & Safety training and employee engagement initiatives.
