- Working proficiency with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs and Studio 5000 / Logix Designer, including programming, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with HMI/SCADA development; Inductive Automation Ignition experience preferred.
- Understanding of industrial networking, control hardware, system architecture, and engineering documentation.
- Working knowledge of field instrumentation, including sensors, transmitters, I/O, and basic calibration concepts.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, mechanical documentation, network drawings, and technical specifications.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate unfamiliar technologies.
- Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, project teams, and stakeholders.
- Ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, travel as needed, and maintain a valid driver’s license and authorization to work in the country where the position is located.
The Controls Engineer II supports the design, integration, testing, and commissioning of automation and control systems, with an emphasis on front-end engineering for mission-critical facilities, including hyperscale and enterprise data centers.
This role combines office-based controls design, industrial networking, HMI/SCADA development, instrumentation, and technical documentation with field support during testing, commissioning, and system deployment. The engineer works under the guidance of project leads while taking ownership of assigned engineering tasks and continuing to develop technical and project leadership capabilities.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Support the design and implementation of PLC, HMI/SCADA, instrumentation, and industrial control systems.
- →Develop control system layouts, industrial network designs, hardware specifications, and engineering documentation.
- →Program, configure, test, and troubleshoot Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs using Studio 5000 / Logix Designer.
- →Develop and support HMI/SCADA applications and graphics, with Ignition experience preferred.
- →Interpret P&IDs, electrical and mechanical schematics, instrumentation data sheets, and control system documentation.
- →Support instrumentation selection, I/O mapping, and integration of field devices with PLC logic.
- →Develop customer-facing technical documentation, including control narratives, Sequences of Operations, system reports, and related project deliverables.
- →Support FAT, startup, commissioning, hardware validation, network verification, and system testing.
- →Provide field support during critical project phases and troubleshoot controls, networking, instrumentation, and integration issues.
- →Communicate project status, technical issues, risks, and scope concerns to project leads and customers while maintaining strong working relationships.
- →Follow customer site requirements, Thermo Systems QMS processes, and established standards for safety, quality, documentation, and system configuration.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
- Typically 2+ years of experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, system integration, or a related technical field.
- Experience with control system design, programming, integration, testing, or commissioning.
- Mission-critical or data center experience preferred.
- Experience with system integration, field service, or controls troubleshooting is a plus.
