The Water Trust empowers rural communities in Uganda to reduce preventable death and debilitating disease by enabling access to safe water and a healthy, clean environment. Since 2008, The Water Trust has partnered with more than 900 communities in Masindi and Kiryandongo, benefiting more than 300,000 people. The Water Trust aims to increase the scale of its operations and pioneer new approaches to increasing the impact and sustainability of water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. In 2017, The Water Trust developed a novel approach to improving water sustainability by forming self-help groups in water point catchments and leveraging these groups to mobilize funds for well repairs and provide a community platform for hygiene and sanitation promotion. Today, The Water Trust has trained more than 900 self-help groups in western Uganda and continues to expand its impact through direct implementation and partnerships.
THE POSITION
The On-Call Driver will support program and operational activities in Masindi and Kiryandongo districts on an as-needed basis. The driver will report to the Operations Officer and will be responsible for providing safe, timely, and professional transportation services for staff, visitors, and project-related activities.
The role requires flexibility, reliability, and willingness to travel frequently to rural communities under varying road conditions. The ideal candidate should have experience driving in field-based NGO operations and a strong understanding of vehicle safety and maintenance procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide safe and timely transportation of staff, visitors, and materials to project sites and meetings.
- Ensure assigned vehicles are operated in accordance with organizational transport policies and road safety regulations.
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections and ensure vehicles are clean, fueled, and in good working condition.
- Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks, fuel records, and movement records.
- Report any vehicle faults, accidents, or maintenance needs promptly to the Operations Officer.
- Support loading and offloading of project materials where necessary.
- Ensure safety and security of passengers and organizational property while on duty.
- Support emergency field movements and assignments when required.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and respectful conduct while representing the organization in communities and with stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
- Minimum of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE); additional training in defensive driving is an added advantage.
- Must possess a valid Ugandan driving permit with classes relevant to organizational vehicles.
- At least 3 years of driving experience, preferably with NGOs or field-based organizations.
- Good knowledge of routes and rural terrain in Masindi, Kiryandongo, and nearby districts.
- Ability to perform basic vehicle troubleshooting and maintenance checks.
- Strong communication skills in English and local languages commonly spoken in the project areas.
- Must be flexible and available for assignments on short notice.
- High level of integrity, punctuality, and professionalism.
- Ability to work long hours and travel frequently in rural communities.
- Defensive driving certification and accident-free driving record are an added advantage.
