The Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) USAF Special Operations School (USAFSOS) Theater Engagement Department has an on-going requirement for language, regional expertise, and culture (LREC) training and education. Theater Engagement (TE) training and education will be carried out at AFSOC’s training and education institution, United States Special Operations School (USAFSOS) and at operational units (CONUS and OCONUS).
  • T200 AFRICOM is a regional expertise course that focuses on the US strategic interests on the continent of Africa, except for Egypt, with emphasis placed upon items of greatest interest to US SOF that operate within the AFRICOM Area of Responsibility (AOR).
  • Significant emphasis is placed on the interagency and international partnership objectives as outlined in the 2019 AFRICOM Commander’s Posture Statement. The course addresses the socio-economic, cultural, political, historical, and security dynamics that influence SOF operations in support of AFRICOM objectives and partnerships.
  • The course weaves intercultural communication and cultural intelligence topics between the AFRICOM objectives and Africa’s strategic environment to enhance partnership communication.
  • Due to its SOF focus, significant time is dedicated to operational perspective briefs presented by Special Operators who have deployed or conducted Joint Combined Exchange Training events throughout Africa.
  • Students are also exposed to other subjects of interest to the US government including terrorist activities, transnational crime, and regional organizations in the five major regions of Africa.  The course features resident faculty instructors, along with guest civilian and military subject-matter experts.
  • Plan and execute one week-long indoctrination, continuing education, pre-deployment education, and issues-based instruction for SOF and SOF enabler students to cultivate region-specific knowledge of the AFRICOM Theater of operations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of which AFSOC units are deploying to the AFRICOM AOR.
  • Maintain knowledge of the missions of the pertinent units through active liaison.
  • Produce lesson plans geared towards those missions and the political/military challenges.
  • Instruct students and selects appropriate guest speakers to deliver instruction, as necessary to best meet the student need.
  • Develop curriculum materials necessary to facilitate on-line/blended learning.
  • Ensure course conduct is following USAFSOS Instructional Systems Development (ISD) guidelines.
  • Manage the curriculum development/review process to ensure course meets or exceeds the needs of SOF customers.
  • Have at least a master’s degree with at least 18 under-graduate semester credit hours and 24 graduate semester hours directly related to the study of Africa in foreign areas studies, country studies, international relations, international development, anthropology, history, sociology, political science, or other related academic discipline to be approved by the Government or;
  • At least 2 years of recent (completed within the last 18 months) experience teaching and a master’s degree in a closely related field to be approved by Government or;
  • At least 3 years as a Combat Aviation Advisor or related experience (Special Forces, etc.) and a bachelor’s degree in any field.  Requests for waiver to this requirement may be granted in very specific circumstances when the applicant has significant relevant operational experience. Official transcripts for each college degree claimed must be provided.
  • Have at least 2 years of experience teaching regional studies to military audiences.
  • Have experience developing curricula and teaching materials related specifically to Africa for courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Have at least 4 years (to include at least 3 months within the last 2 years) of experience living in the target region on the local economy engaged in work or studies, not in a US compound, or;
  • At least 3 years as a Combat Aviation Advisor or related experience (e.g. Special Forces etc..) and a bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • A combination of military experience, appropriate education, and teaching experience is preferred.  Knowledge of a foreign language is not required but it will be considered preferable if it enables the instructor to use authentic materials written in the target language.
  • Master’s degree preferred, bachelor’s degree required in political science, conflict management, military science, international relations, regional area study, or related field.
  • Prefer a minimum of three years active or reserve experience as a US military member in a Special Operations Forces functional community (i.e. Combat Aviation Advisor, Combat Control Team, AFSOC career flier, Army Special Force or Civil Affairs)
