About the Role

As an Outside Plant Technician, you'll play a key role in building, maintaining, and expanding Ting's fiber network. You'll perform installation, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of outside plant infrastructure, including conduit, fiber, splice enclosures, cabinets, and utility locating.

As one of Ting's frontline representatives in the community, you'll prioritize safety, quality workmanship, and an exceptional customer experience while working independently on increasingly complex network construction and maintenance activities.

This is an on-site role with frequent travel within the Greater Raleigh area. Shift is Monday to Friday between 730 AM to 430 PM. 

Responsibilities

  • Independently install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair Ting's fiber outside plant network.
  • Perform drop burials from the fiber plant to the Network Interface Device (NID) using appropriate equipment (plows, shovels, etc.).
  • Blow fiber drops from splice enclosures to customer premises without supervision.
  • Couple and proof microduct pathways independently.
  • Build and maintain splice enclosures (splice domes).
  • Install, configure, clean, troubleshoot, and maintain passive cabinets and cross-connects.
  • Perform mainline fiber blowing operations independently.
  • Complete accurate end-of-shift (EOS) reports, ensuring quality assurance standards are met and reporting discrepancies.
  • Perform utility locates and work safely around underground infrastructure in compliance with 811 requirements.
  • Read and interpret plant maps, construction drawings, GIS, and CAD documentation to support installation and repairs.
  • Perform routine outside plant maintenance, including handholds, fiber drops, and related infrastructure.
  • Diagnose and initiate repairs for outages, light loss, and other network issues.
  • Test fiber using OTDR, VFL, and other testing equipment to verify network integrity.
  • Establish fiber cross-connects for customer activations.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of central offices, active cabinets, and backup power systems such as UPS and generators.
  • Perform fiber splicing using mass fusion and ribbonizing techniques.
  • Identify preventative maintenance opportunities and complete repairs efficiently.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service while professionally resolving customer concerns.
  • Travel to other Ting markets as needed to support network construction and maintenance.
  • Lead traffic control and establish safe construction work zones, including flagging and directing traffic.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to support network operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Strong understanding of fiber outside plant construction and FTTH network topology.
  • Experience with:
    • Fiber blowing
    • Drop installations
    • Fiber splicing and termination
    • Mass fusion splicing
    • Ribbonizing
    • OTDR and VFL testing
    • Light-level testing
    • Conduit continuity testing
    • Microduct coupling
  • Ability to locate underground utilities and safely excavate around existing infrastructure.
  • Experience interpreting GIS mapping and CAD drawings.
  • Familiarity with data center and network operations concepts.
  • Comfortable using mobile workforce and operational applications such as ServiceMax, HiBob, Deputy, or similar platforms.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and compliance with all company safety programs.
  • Comfortable working:
    • Outdoors in all weather conditions
    • In confined spaces
    • On ladders or bucket trucks up to 35+ feet
  • Able to lift up to 75 lbs using safe lifting techniques.
  • Willing to participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Ability to travel to support multiple Ting markets when required.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of telecommunications experience with significant hands-on fiber construction and splicing experience.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) certification.

The base salary range for this position is $58,000 - $62,000. Range shown in $USD for US residents. Other countries will differ. Range may vary on a number of factors including, but not limited to: location, experience and qualifications.
