Controls Engineer III - Process

The Controls Engineer III- Process position identifies, develops, and realizes Rheem’s future automation technologies.  This is a high-impact and high-visibility role within the organization, with expectations to deliver immediate and long-term results. This engineer will be part of a controls team responsible for the ideation, development, and implementation of state-of-the-art automated solutions with a first and best-to-market mindset focused on efficiency, safety, and capacity.

This position will serve our Rheem North America Division, located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This position will follow our Onsite work arrangement, with team members working in the office Monday through Friday. 

• Support and improve plant manufacturing processes, with a strong focus on automation, controls, and electrical systems. 
• Provide technical ownership of plant hardware, leads process improvements, troubleshoots electrical and automation issues, and ensures equipment operates safely and efficiently. 
• Support day-to-day operations using tools of the engineering discipline.
• Develop and implement solutions that improve the quality and efficiency of the various manufacturing processes in fabrication and assembly operations.
• Apply various technical problem-solving techniques to evaluate recommended manufacturing improvement strategies and programs.
• Investigate, develop, and implement solutions to production bottlenecks and stoppages in production considering such factors as safety, ergonomics, quality, and cost.
• Investigate and analyze design, drawing, and engineering change orders for such factors as necessity for change, practicality, and economy of manufacture and determine plan of action necessary to control change.
• Initiate justifications, issue engineering procedures, order materials, and follow through to completion projects based on cost reduction and product or plant improvement.
• Clearly and effectively, present ideas and problem solutions to department heads and plant management.
• Develop, organize and lead plant level cross-functional project teams including personnel from Engineering, Quality, Materials/Purchasing, and Production (salaried and hourly).
• Lead Lean teams, Kaizen events, capital improvement projects, and 5S events.
• Works under some supervision of department leadership with independence on projects in scope.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field.

• 5+ years of related work experience in manufacturing engineering, process improvement, or similar.

• Experience with Automated Mechatronic System Ideation & Design (electrical and controls focus), PLC Programming Design and Troubleshooting, SQL, Factory Talk Transaction Manager, Ignition  

• Experience in Robotics | OEM Programming Languages (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, Kuka) 

• Experience with Vision and Perception | Prime OEM Experience (i.e., Cognex, Banner, Sick, etc.) 

• Experience with Software Design, Simulation, and Emulation (controls focused). 

• Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA), AutoCAD, Pro-E.

• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with attention to detail and accuracy.

• Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of relevant software such as MS Office Suite.

• Minimum 4 years overall Automation & Robotics career experience; 

• Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a matrix team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in related field.

• Robotics | Advanced Path Planning and Functionality in Non-Native Languages (i.e., RoS) 

• Vision and Perception | Development of Vision Software to Facilitate Robotic Path Planning 

• Industrial Electrical Licensure 

• UL Industrial Control Panel Design and Build 

• Machine Learning Development and Implementation 

• MHE (Material Handling Equipment) Specific Logic Control 

• Distribution and Logistics Automation Experience

• Experience in designing and developing automation systems; 

• Experience in designing and developing robotic applications (hardware and software); 

• Experience working with similar industry products.
